TEMPE, Ariz. - The Utah women's volleyball team opened the 2003 season with a four-game (21-30, 23-30, 30-28, 24-30) loss to host Arizona State in the Sun Devil Volleyball Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Utes hit for .230 on the match, compared to the.349 of the Sun Devils. Arizona State also had 13 service aces in the match.
"This was an extremely tough environment for us to open the season," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "They have a style that we haven't seen -- they did some very unorthodox things."
"There were a ton of good things in this match," she continued. "We had to change our defense mid-match and the team adjusted extremely well."
Senior All-American candidate Kim Turner eclipsed the Utah all-time career assists record in the fourth and final game of the match when she notched her 450th career block assist. She finished the match with 13 kills, seven digs and six blocks.
Junior Lyndsey Henderson also had 13 kills, while sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt finished with a career-high 12 kills. Junior setter Kelsie Kartchner dished out 37 assists and had a team-high nine digs, as did senior libero Jackie Morrill.
In game one, ASU jumped out to a five-point lead and never looked back, leading by as many as 12 and winning by nine (30-21). The Sun Devils had 19 kills on the game compared to the nine of the Utes. Utah was also out-hit.343 to .160.
The Sun Devils led throughout game two, building a nine-point lead after going on a 5-0 run, and winning 30-23. ASU hit .500 on the game, while Utah hit .222 as a team.
After being down by as many as five in game three, Utah came back to tie the game at 17 and win by a score of 30-28. Turner had five kills on the game as the Utes out-hit ASU .265 to .189.
In the final game, the Utes played the Sun Devils close until the final points, when ASU pulled away for the 30-24 win behind a .414 hitting percentage.

The Utes face San Diego at 10 a.m. (PDT) tomorrow, Aug. 30, followed by a 5 p.m. match against Ohio.
