Ute Volleyball Team Falls to 0-2 on Year

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Utah volleyball team fell to 0-2 on the season with a five-game loss to San Diego (18-30, 16-30, 30-27, 30-27,7-15) at the Sun Devil Volleyball Classic in Tempe, Ariz., this morning. The Utes hit for .135 on the match, while USD combined for a .291 hitting percentage. Utah was also edged in blocks 14 to 13.5.
"I don't think we lost because of lack of effort or want," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "In games three and four, we played smarter instead of trying harder. We focused on what we had to do to win each point. We've got holes of inexperience and when you play tough competition, they tend to take advantage of that."
Senior All-American candidate Kim Turner led Utah with 20 kills, eight digs and six blocks. Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt added 13 kills, while senior libero Jackie Morrill notched 15 digs. Junior setter Kelsie Kartchner dished out 41 assists to go along with six kills, eight digs and three blocks.
With the exception of a tie early on, the San Diego held the lead throughout game one. The Utes used a 4-0 run to cut the Torero lead to four (14-10), but USD pulled away to win 30-18. The Utes hit -.024 on the game, while the Toreros had a .312 hitting percentage.
San Diego dominated game two, leading the entire way and winning 30-14. Utah hit .033 on the game, while the Toreros compiled a .560 hitting percentage.
Utah snatched a tight game three 30-27 to avoid the sweep. The Utes out-hit the Toreros .324 to .133. Turner had seven kills, six digs and three blocks in the game.
Utah came out strong in game four, maintaining the lead for the first half of the game. The Toreros then rattled off six straight points to take the lead, 15-13. However, the Utes battled back for the 30-27 win.
The fifth and deciding game remained close until USD went on a 6-0 run to seal the 15-7 victory. The Toreros hit .692 on the game, while the Utes had a .176 hitting percentage.

The Utes face Ohio at 5 p.m. (PDT) tonight to close out the tournament.
