SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team improved to 6-4 on the season with a 3-1 (30-15, 26-30, 30-23, 30-16) win over Weber State at home tonight. The Utes hit .326 on the match and held the Wildcats to just .108. Utah also out-blocked Weber State 13-8.
"The team knew that they needed to respond after last night," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "I still don't think we played the best volleyball of the season, but that's okay. We were a lot more disciplined and fundamentally sound."
Sophomores Danielle Leichliter and Shelly Sommerfeldt led the Utes with 17 kills apiece. Senior All-America candidate Kim Turner added 13.
Junior setter Kelsie Kartchner, playing against her sister Jamie, also a setter, finished with 44 assists. Jamie had 35.
Senior libero Jackie Morrill led the Utah defense with nine digs. Turner, senior Taryn Horner and freshman Connie Dangerfield added seven more apiece. Turner also had seven blocks.
Utah trailed just once in game one (4-5) before rattling off eight straight points to take a commanding 12-5 lead. The Utes never looked back, leading by as many as 16 and winning 30-15. Utah hit for .314 on the game and held Weber State to .000. Leichliter led Utah with five kills.
In game two, Weber State used a 5-0 run to jump ahead 9-3. Utah fought back to tie it at 13 and again at 15, but the Wildcats pulled away in the ends, winning 30-26. Weber State out-hit Utah .267 to .184 and out-blocked the Utes 6-3 on the game. Leichliter and Sommerfeldt each had five kills to lead Utah.
Utah led or was tied for the lead throughout all of game three, pulling away at the end for the seven-point win. The Utes hit an amazing .483 on the game while holding Weber State to .154. Utah also out-blocked the Wildcats 4-1.
Utah dominated the fourth and final game, winning by 14 points, 30-16. The Utes combined for a .370 hitting percentage on the game, led by Sommerfeldt with five kills and Leichliter with four.
