COMING UP:
The Utes (6-5) open Mountain West Conference play this weekend by hosting Wyoming (10-4) and Colorado State (9-4) this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH:
Utah was swept (30-32, 23-30, 30-32) by Utah State in Logan, Utah, on Tuesday night. The Utes hit for .246 on the match, compared to the .303 of the Aggies. However, Utah out-blocked Utah State 8-7.5. Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt led the Utes with 15 kills, while junior Lyndsey Henderson had 13. She also added six blocks. Senior All-America candidate Kim Turner finished with nine kills, the first time she didn't reach double figures all season. Senior libero Jackie Morrill finished with a team-high 11 digs. Junior setters Kelsie Kartchner and Tracy Neumeier both played. Kartchner finished with 25 assists, while Neumeier had 16.
On the season, the Utes are led by Turner, who averages 3.71 kills, 1.50 blocks and 2.45 digs per game. Sommerfeldt adds 3.76 kills per game, while Morrill averages a team-high 3.24 digs per game. Kartchner averages 10.74 assists per game.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
Wyoming
The Cowgirls (10-4) went 3-1 at the Montana State Wingate Invitational last weekend for a second-place finish. Wyoming swept Montana (30-17, 30-20, 33-31) on Thursday before falling to Montana State 0-3 (19-30, 24-30, 25-30) on Friday. On Saturday, the Cowgirls defeated Marquette 3-1 (33-31, 30-25, 25-30, 30-21) before sweeping Gonzaga (30-22, 32-30, 30-21). Michele Rauter and Amanda Miller were both named to the all-tournament team.
Wyoming is led on the season by Rauter, who averages 4.18 kills and 3.24 digs per game. Sara Maytorena adds 3.22 kills, 2.59 digs and 1.13 blocks per game. Miller boasts a team-high 3.31 digs per game average, while setter Amy Doman averages 11.83 assists per game.
Colorado State
CSU (9-4), picked to finish second in the MWC in the preseason coaches poll, went 2-1 last weekend to place second at the Diet Coke Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. The Rams swept Charlotte (30-22, 30-20, 30-14) and beat Wisconsin-Milwaukee 3-1 (30-21, 29-31, 30-25, 30-20) after falling to No. 22 Minnesota 2-3 (26-30, 30-23, 30-20, 24-30, 9-15) in the opening round of the tournament. CSU had three players -- Melissa Courtney, Becky Sarauer and current MWC Player of the Week Katie Jo Shirley -- named to the all-tournament team.
The Rams are led by Sarauer, Shirley and Tess Rogers, who average 4.02, 3.53 and 3.51 kills per game, respectively. Courtney, the setter, averages 12.96 assists per game, while libero Lindsey Kerr boasts a team-high 3.00 digs per game average.
SERIES SHORTS:
* The Utes lead the all-time series with Wyoming 27-23. The two teams met most recently in the first round of the MWC Tournament on Nov. 21, 2002, with Utah winning 3-0 in Fort Collins, Colo. The Utes are 15-9 at home, 8-14 away and 4-0 at a neutral site vs. the Cowgirls
* Utah is 17-36 all-time against Colorado State. In their last meeting on Nov. 15, 2002, the Utes fell 3-1 at Crimson Court, snapping a 29-match home winning streak. Utah is 10-12 at home, 3-19 away and 4-5 at a neutral site against the Rams.

As a team, the Utes rank second in the MWC in blocks per game (2.98).
Individually, Kim Turner ranks second in blocks per game (1.50), third in points (4.81) and seventh in kills per game (3.71). Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt is sixth in kills per game (3.76) and eighth in points per game (4.31). Junior Kelsie Kartchner is fifth in service aces (0.42), and seventh in assists (10.74) and hitting percentage (.311). Senior Jackie Morrill is fourth in digs per game (3.24), while sophomore Danielle Leichliter is eighth in services aces per game (0.38). Junior Lyndsey Henderson is sixth in blocks per game (1.24).
CLOSING IN:
Senior All-America candidate Kim Turner currently has 1,286 kills on her career, good for third place all-time in the Ute record book. She needs 280 more kills to move into first place (1,566).
Turner already ranks first in both total blocks (563) and block assists (501), sixth in block solos (62) and seventh in attempts (2,702).
Junior setter Kelsie Kartchner has moved into fourth place all-time in assists at Utah. She now has 2,451 on her career.
TURNER PRESEASON MWC PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
Senior Kim Turner, the reigning Co-MWC Player of the Year, was selected by the league's head coaches as the 2003 preseason MWC Player of the Year. Turner is the only two-time MWC Tournament MVP in league history.
Joining Turner on the preseason all-conference team was junior setter Kelsie Kartchner, who was named the Best Setter at last year's MWC Tournament.
SUNDAY NIGHT SPIKE:
Utah will face Colorado State on live television at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. The match is part of the College Sports Television (CSTV) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Sunday Night Spike package.
TURNER MWC PLAYER OF WEEK FOR SEPT. 1-6:
Kim Turner, a middle blocker from Chandler, Ariz., was named MWC Player of the Week for Sept. 1-6, marking her ninth career award. Turner was named MVP of the Utah Classic for the third straight year as she helped the Utes capture the championship. In a five-game win vs. Washington State, Turner posted a triple double (15 kills, 15 digs, 11 blocks) and set Classic five-game records with nine block assists and three aces. For the week, Turner hit .284 and averaged 3.55 kills, 2.82 digs and 1.82 blocks per game.
