SALT LAKE CITY - Utah freshman goalkeeper Ashley Mason has been named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Mason, a Sunnyvale, Calif., native, helped the Utes to a 1-0 upset victory over then-No. 2 Florida on Sunday at Ute Field. Thanks to the win, Utah is 19th in the NSCAA/adidas rankings this week. Although the Utes have been ranked in various polls the past two years, this is the first time they have cracked the NSCAA/adidas Top 25.
Mason tallied the first complete game shutout of her career against Florida. This is her first player of the week award. Mason played all 90 minutes in goal against the Gators, saving seven shots and holding the Florida to no goals for the first time this season.
Mason also routinely punted the ball over the midfield line, which changed the field and kept pressure on the Gator defense throughout the match. Florida, which averages 14.75 shots a game, was held to nine total shots in the game and got only four shots on goal from its top three scorers.
Utah is off to the best start in the history of the program at 8-1. The Utes take on Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif., on Friday at 3:00 p.m. (PDT).
