COMING UP:
The Utes (7-6, 1-1) travel to Albuquerque, N.M. and Colorado Springs, Colo., to face New Mexico (3-11, 0-1) and Air Force (10-4, 1-0) this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3-4. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH:
Utah opened MWC play 1-1 by sweeping Wyoming (30-24, 34-32, 30-26) on Friday night and falling to Colorado State 3-1 (25-30, 27-30, 30-28, 15-30) on Saturday night. It was the third time in a row that the Utes have fallen at the hands of the Rams.
On the season, the Utes are led by senior All-America candidate Kim Turner, who averages 3.78 kills, 2.51 digs and 1.43 blocks. Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt adds 3.69 kills per game, while senior libero Jackie Morrill averages a team-high 3.33 digs per game. Junior setter Kelsie Kartchner averages 10.59 assists per game.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
New Mexico
The Lobos (3-11, 0-1) opened conference play with a three-game loss (30-32, 22-30, 28-30) at Air Force last Friday after falling to instate rival New Mexico State 3-0 (27-30, 27-30, 21-30) on Monday.
New Mexico is led on the season by Anna Reines, who averages 3.45 kills per game, and Monica Meihack and Adah Burke, who average 2.45 and 2.36 digs per game, respectively.
Air Force
The Falcons (10-4, 1-0) swept New Mexico on Friday behind the 18 kills of Delavane Diaz and 15 kills of Lamecca Jefferson. Air Force hit for .371 on the match, compared to the .192 of New Mexico.
The Falcons are led by Diaz, who averages a league-high 5.06 kills and 2.94 digs per game. Setter Kristin Huitt averages 12.92 assists per game.
SERIES SHORTS:
* The Utes lead the all-time series with New Mexico 30-26. The last time the two teams met, on Nov. 2, 2002, Utah won 3-1. The Utes are 14-9 at home, 12-14 away and 4-3 at a neutral site vs. the Lobos.
* Utah is undefeated all-time vs. Air Force (10-0). In their last meeting on Nov. 1, 2002, the Utes won 3-0 in Colorado Springs. Utah is 5-0 at home and 5-0 away against the Falcons.
MWC LEADERS:
As a team, the Utes rank third in the MWC in blocks per game (2.90). In conference only statistics, Utah leads the league in assists (15.14) and digs (13.57), ranks second in kills (16.43) and fourth in service aces (1.43).
Individually, Kim Turner ranks third in blocks per game (1.43), fourth in points (4.82), seventh in kills per game (3.78) and ninth in digs per game (2.51). Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt is eighth in kills per game (3.69) and ninth in points per game (4.19). Junior Kelsie Kartchner is tied for fourth in service aces (0.41), sixth in hitting percentage (.324) and seventh in assists (10.59). Senior Jackie Morrill is third in digs per game (3.33), while sophomore Danielle Leichliter is tied for fourth in services aces per game (0.41). Junior Lyndsey Henderson is sixth in blocks per game (1.24).
CLOSING IN:
Senior All-America candidate Kim Turner currently has 1,315 kills on her career, good for second place all-time in the Ute record book. She needs 251 more kills to move into first place (1,566).
Turner already ranks first in both total blocks (570) and block assists (507), sixth in block solos (63) and seventh in attempts (2,758).
Junior setter Kelsie Kartchner ranks fourth all-time in assists at Utah. She now has 2,509 on her career.
TURNER NAMED PRESEASON MWC PLAYER OF YEAR:
Senior Kim Turner, the reigning Co-MWC Player of the Year, was selected by the league's head coaches as the 2003 preseason MWC Player of the Year. Turner is the only two-time MWC Tournament MVP in league history.
Joining Turner on the preseason all-conference team was junior setter Kelsie Kartchner, who was named the Best Setter at last year's MWC Tournament.
SUNDAY NIGHT SPIKE:
Utah will face Colorado State on live television at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. The match is part of the College Sports Television (CSTV) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Sunday Night Spike package.
TURNER MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK SEPT. 1-6
Kim Turner, a middle blocker from Chandler, Ariz., was named MWC Player of the Week for Sept. 1-6, marking her ninth career award. Turner was named MVP of the Utah Classic for the third straight year as she helped the Utes capture the championship. In a five-game win vs. Washington State, Turner posted a triple double (15 kills, 15 digs, 11 blocks) and set Classic five-game records with nine block assists and three aces. For the week, Turner hit .284 and averaged 3.55 kills, 2.82 digs and 1.82 blocks per game.
