This Week:
The University of Utah track and field team will continue its 2004 indoor season with the Weber State Wildcat Invitational Sat., Jan. 24, in Ogden, Utah. Throwing events, however, will kickoff on Wed., Jan. 21 at Weber State. In addition to Utah and Weber State, athletes from Utah Valley State College are scheduled to compete. The Utes are coming off a strong performance at Oval Open Invitational and will look to build on last weekend's effort.
Previous Meet:
The Utah indoor track and field team finished competition for the Oval Open Invitational on Sat., Jan. 17. Held at the Utah Olympic Oval, the meet featured athletes from Utah, Brigham Young, Weber State and Utah Valley State College. The Utes won five events including the pole vault, 400 meters, 800 meters, 4X400-meter relay and the shot put, as well as getting several impressive finishes from their younger athletes.
Utes to Watch:
Senior Nellie Hammons had another great meet at the Oval Open last weekend notching a first-place finish in the 800m (2:12.15) and a second-place finish in the mile (5:13.09). However, she was the first collegiate runner to finish in that event. Hammons will look for another great meet in Ogden this weekend.
Senior Tracy Hamblin started the indoor season with a win in the pole vault last weekend. She also finished second in the triple jump with a distance on 10.96m. Her mark ranks second on Utah's top-ten list and is a new personal record-almost a .2m improvement on her pervious best mark. Hamblin redshirted last season to improve her vaulting and should lead Utah's strong lineup this year.
Junior Jen Jackman proved her versatility at the Olympic Oval with strong performances in the 400m and the 60-meter hurdles. Jackman won the 400m with an impressive time of 57.16 and placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.10). Jackman is one of Utah's most talented veterans and should have a great junior year for the Utes.
Upcoming Meets:
Next up for the Utes is the Utah State Invitational on Sat., Jan. 31, in Logan Utah.
