THIS WEEK:
The Utah track and field teams will split up competition sites this weekend. Most of the athletes will compete at the Bodybuilding.com Invitational in Nampa, Idaho, on Saturday, Jan. 31. The throwers will head to Logan, Utah, for the Wilson Motor Invitational that same day.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Lisa Archer:
"This weekend should feature some of our steepest competition so far," states Archer. "We are hoping to compete at a higher level and post some great marks."
LAST WEEK:
The Utes competed at the Wildcat Invitational Saturday, Jan. 24, against athletes from Utah Valley State College, Weber State and Brigham Young. The team used the meet as a training session to help prepare for this weekend's meet in Idaho.
Leading the way for Utah was Nellie Hammons, who grabbed the mile in 5:15.66. Continuing as Utah's one-two punch in the pole vault were Tracey Hamblin and Trisha Wagner, who both posted 11' 00" to tie for first.
On the men's side, Delfino Arevalo won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:07.95. Nephi Tyler finished third in the mile run with a 4:21.04, while Casey Chow and Mike Plum were third in the pole vault with 13' 2.00".
UTES ON THE RUN:
Nellie Hammons improved on her second-place mile finish from Oval Invitational two weeks ago by grabbing first place at the Wildcat Invitational last Saturday. Hammons is Utah's best runner in the 800 and mile.
Becky Riddle had a great meet at the Oval Invitational winning the shot put with an impressive distance of 12.62m, a new personal record. She also boasted a three-foot improvement in the weight throw. Only a sophomore, Riddle set eight personal records last season and will look to have another great year.
"Riddle has always been a great competitor," states Assistant Coach Tapio Kuusela. "This year, she's become more consistent and focused and it's helped her in competition."
MIGHTY FROSH:
The Utah freshmen have looked impressive in the young season on both the men's and women's side. Amanda Feigt was the first collegiate finisher in the long jump (18' 06.25") at the Wildcat Invitational last weekend.
Liz Gifford is showing continued improvement in all of her pentathlon events. Gifford posted two personal records in the long jump at the Wildcat Invitational last Saturday.
Mike Plum is dabbling in a few events for Utah. Plum finished third in the pole vault and fourth in the 55-high hurdles at the Wildcat Invitational.
UPCOMING EVENTS: Next up for the Utes is the Mountain State Games on Friday, Feb. 6, in Pocatello, Idaho. Competition for the meet will last through Saturday, Feb. 7.
