This Week
The Utes (7-4-2, 0-1-1 MWC) play their first Mountain West Conference road game against Air Force (3-9-1, 0-2-0 MWC) in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Utah then returns home for its final nonconference game and "Senior Day" against UVSC (4-7-2) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
Scouting Air Force
The Falcons are 3-9-1 overall, 0-2-0 in Mountain West Conference play and 2-2-0 at home this season. Last week, the Falcons lost to Wyoming at home 1-0 on Friday and lost at New Mexico 2-1 on Sunday.
Sophomore forward Brittney Perkowski has two goals and a team-best three assists. Junior midfielder Meredith Benson has a team-best three goals. Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Drew has a 1.52 goal-against-average and has made 61 saves in 13 games.
Utah leads the all-time series with Air Force 5-0-0 and has a 2-0-0 mark in Colorado Springs, Colo. Last season, the Utes defeated the Falcons 4-0 on Oct. 9 in Salt Lake City.
Scouting UVSC
The Wolverines are 4-7-2 overall and 1-2-1 on the road this season. They are competing as an independent in their second year as an NCAA Division I member. Last week, UVSC defeated South Dakota State at home 3-0 on Thursday and lost at Weber State 5-2 on Saturday.
Junior forward Carolyn Theurer leads UVSC with six goals and four assists. Freshman forward Robyn Rasmussen has five goals and one assists. Freshman goalkeeper Natasha Bell has a 2.38 goals-against-average and has made 32 saves in eight games.
Utah and Utah Valley State meet for the first time on Saturday.
Last Week
Utah opened Mountain West Conference play at home, losing 1-0 to UNLV on Thursday and tying San Diego State 0-0 after two overtime periods on Saturday.
UNLV's Angie Inzana bounced a soft cross over Ute goalkeeper Ashley Mason in the 70th minute to give the Rebels a 1-0 win on Thursday afternoon. Utah suffered its first loss at home this season after starting 5-0-1. Utah outshot the Rebels 16-5, had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks, and forced keeper Jenna Huff to make six saves.
Both Utah and San Diego State managed just nine shots in a defensive battle on Saturday. Utah had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Mason made three saves in goal for the Utes while her counterpart, Sophia Perez, made four stops for SDSU. Utah got its fourth shutout of the season. Sophomores Michelle Deatherage and McKenzie Joyner both had two shots on goal for the Utes.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 36-10-7 in his third season at Utah. Last season, Manning was named the 2003 West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Rich's Remarks
On the state of the Utes: "We are disappointed with our start to Mountain West Conference play. However, we did some nice things in both games last week. Against UNLV, we played with some good rhythm and created excellent chances, but were unable to convert. Against San Diego State, we played very hard and defended well. We were unable to put a complete game together and, unfortunately, couldn't find the net. We had a tough couple of weeks and had some tired legs out there. We will put a good week of practice in and look forward to getting back on track at Air Force on Thursday."
On playing Air Force: "Air Force has been an enjoyable game in the past because they play hard. They play with an attacking style and have some skillful players. It will be a game played at both ends of the field."
On playing UVSC and Senior Day: "UVSC will bring a rivalry flavor on Saturday. They have played us very tough in the spring the last couple of years. Also, they have some talented players from local areas and we should have a great atmosphere at Ute Soccer Field."
"Saturday is also our Senior Day. We will honor the contributions of our five graduating players. Tracy Stratton Garner, Lauren Field, Julie Herdic, Glennis Donnelly and Erin Pruitt have served our program and the university with great success and dignity, both on and off the field. Saturday will be a great celebration of the work of these five young ladies."

Ute Notes
? The Utes are 10-2-2 in Mountain West Conference regular-season games under Rich Manning. Utah went 6-0-0 in MWC play to claim its first outright league title in school history in 2003, following a 4-1-1 record in 2002.
? Utah has been shut out in its last three games and five times overall this season. The Utes lost to San Diego (3-0) on Oct. 3, fell to UNLV (1-0) on Oct. 7 and tied San Diego State (0-0 2OT) on Oct. 9.
? The Utes' 2-1 win over No. 7 UCLA on Oct. 1 improved Utah's record to 5-2 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams under Rich Manning. It was Utah's first game against a ranked team this season. Utah was 2-1 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams in 2003. The Utes defeated No. 5 Florida (1-0) on Sept. 28 and No. 17 Michigan (4-1) on Aug. 31 at Ute Field. ? Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Mason, who led the NCAA in goals per game last season, got her third shutout of the season last Saturday in a 0-0 tie against San Diego State. Mason made three saves against the Aztecs.
? The Utes scored a season-high four goals against Washington State on Sept. 23. Utah also scored three goals against Denver (3-1) on Sept. 10 and Boise State (3-0) on Sept. 19.
