SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 17-ranked University of Utah volleyball team wrapped up regular season Mountain West Conference play as co-regular season champions. The Utes will share the title with Colorado State after losing to the No. 10-ranked team here tonight, 3-0.
Game scores were 26-30, 22-30 and 20-30. With the loss, which snaps a four-match winning streak, Utah slips to 21-4 overall and to 13-1 in MWC play. CSU improves to 22-3 overall and owns the same 13-1 mark in conference tilts.
"I thought that CSU played well," head coach Beth Launiere said. "Congratulations to it. We didn't play our best game but the Rams had a lot to do with that. We didn't overlook them. They just outplayed us tonight and that was the difference.
"That was the first challenge we have had in a while and I think it affected us."
Defense was the difference tonight. A usually potent offense, CSU used its defense and sharp serving to frustrate the Utes. CSU held the edge at the net, outblocking the home squad, 11-7. Katie Jo Shirley-Cahoon led the way with seven blocks (one solo). The visitors held Utah to a .105 hitting percentage. The Utes never hit better than .242 in a game, leaving the home team to hit -.059 in the second frame. CSU hit .203 over the three games, bagging kills at a .385 clip (18 kills, three errors and 39 attempts) in the final stanza.
The Rams chalked up 10 aces (to Utah's two) and saw four come from Katherine Whitney.
Leading the way for Utah was Lyndsey Henderson with 10 kills and four blocks (one solo). The attack was led by Tracy Neumeier and her 20 assists. But, Kelsie Kartchner tallied 16 herself.
Neumeier's nine digs led the Utes as well.
Becky Sarauer's 11 kills led all players as did Melissa Courtney with a double-double of 33 assists and 15 digs.
Next up is the MWC tournament in Fort Collins, Colo., on Nov. 18-20. The Utes will be the No. 1 or No. 2 seed, depending on the commissioner's draw to break the tie between the CSU and Utah.
