SALT LAKE CITY - The 2003 Mountain West Conference all-academic volleyball team, recently released by the conference office, contains seven student-athletes off of Utah's NCAA second-round team. Senior middle blocker Kim Turner, a CoSIDA first-team Academic All-District honoree, is making her fourth appearance on the MWC all-academic team. Turner posted a 3.64 GPA as an elementary education major.
Joining Turner on the academic all-conference team were: Lyndsey Henderson (3.24, exercise and sport science), Taryn Horner (3.21, exercise and sport science), Kelsie Kartchner (3.49, exercise and sport science), Carlee Kulovitz (3.07, undecided), Jackie Morrill (3.55, elementary education) and Shelly Sommerfeldt (3.05, business).
To be eligible for MWC academic honors, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor.
The Utes finished the season 22-9 and were ranked No. 23 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) final poll. Utah defeated then-No. 13 Santa Clara in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to host and No. 14 Washington in the second round.
