QUOTING HEAD COACH Lisa Archer:
"The team we are taking to the conference championships is the largest and strongest ever. We are trying to set a school record in total team points and have a strong chance of conference titles in at least four events."
LAST WEEK:
The University of Utah indoor track and field teams finished competition for the Weber State Tune-Up on Saturday, Feb. 21. Held at the Swenson Multi-Purpose Arena, the meet featured athletes from Utah, Weber State, Utah State and Utah Valley State College.
The Utes dominated several events including the women's pole vault and weight throw. Utah finished with the top three marks in the pole vault while finishing second, third and fourth in the weight throw.
Leading the way for the women were Andrea Davidson and Tracy Hamblin, who both notched first-place finishes in their respective events. Davidson won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.11, while Hamblin took gold in the pole vault with a height of 12' 2.00".
On the men's side, veterans Delfino Arevalo and Nephi Tyler led the way. Tyler won the 800m race, boasting a 1:53.55 time. Arevalo took gold in the mile run with 4:21.61.
"This was a fine-tuning meet," said Head Coach Lisa Archer. "We had many athletes earn their spot on the conference team. It was good preparation for next week's Mountain West Conference Championships."
UTES ON THE RUN:
Senior Nellie Hammons looks to have her best performance of the season in the 800m this week. Hammons has controlled her event throughout the season and currently ranks second in the MWC and 20th in the nation with a time of 2:08.63. Hammons should score high points for the Utes this weekend.
Senior Katie Decker is currently tied for the seventh-best mark in the country in the long jump (5' 11.25") and second in the conference. She has been on fire the past two meets and will look to defend her title as indoor high jump champion.
Senior Nephi Tyler has been one of Utah's top male athletes this season, performing well in both the 800m and the mile. In the conference, Tyler ranks 10th in the 800m (1:53.55) and 17th in the mile (4:15.05).
Senior Delfino Arevalo should make some noise the 3,000m this week. He ranks 17th in the conference, but has proven in the past to finish up strong in the event.
MIGHTY FROSH:
Amanda Feigt will be a major point contributor this week in her first conference championship meet. Feigt has been one of the conference's best freshmen, performing well in the long jump and the 200m. Feigt ranks fourth in the conference with a distance of 18' 8.75" and 20th in the 200m.
Susan Atwater is anchoring a strong pole vaulting lineup this year for Utah. In only her first season, Atwater has posted several impressive marks. She currently ranks seventh (11' 10.00") in the conference and could contribute high points this week.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
Next up for those Utes who qualify, is the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, March 11, in Fayetteville, Ark. The three-day meet will continue through Saturday, March 13.
