SALT LAKE CITY - The Ute women's soccer team traveled to Northern California on Saturday, March 6 to take on University of San Francisco and California for a round-robin tournament.
The Utes played San Francisco to a 0-0 tie in the opening game. Utah's defense, ranked second-best in the nation last season with four freshmen starting, didn't give USF any quality scoring opportunities. Center backs Michelle Deatherage and Melissa Wayman teamed with outside backs McKenzie Joyner and Tasia Duarte to limit a potent USF attack. Freshman Lindie Theuer, who joined the team in January, saw action at right back late in the second half, as well.
Ashley Mason, the NCAA's top goalkeeper in 2003, earned the shutout one day after receiving her award for leading the nation in goals against average. The games were a homecoming for Mason and freshman forward Adele Letro. Mason grew up in nearby Sunnyvale, while Letro is from Davis.
The Utes also received outstanding midfield play from defensive midfielder Tracy Stratton, and attacking mids Hailey Marsh, Addie Hawkins and Erin Pruitt against San Francisco.
In the evening game, Utes took on host California, which had tied USF 1-1 earlier in the day. Before a large crowd the Utes and Bears battled to a 0-0 tie in an exciting back-and-forth game.
The Utes' forward line of Letro, Carisse Winegar, Julie Herdic and Lauren Field created numerous opportunities against Cal but were unable to convert. California's best chance to score came in the first half when forward Katie Ratican broke loose on the right flank and went one-on-one with Mason. Mason closed down Ratican and forced the shot wide.
"The trip was everything we would like to get out of our spring play dates," said Ute head coach Rich Manning. "We got tough competition from two quality opponents in USF and Cal. Our players got more game experience. And, we played in front of an enthusiastic crowd, which makes it even more enjoyable.
"Our team defense is getting up to speed as we play more. We still must work to improve our ball possession and cohesiveness on offense. Individually, Hailey Marsh is making great strides as an attacking player. It's nice to see that Adele Letro is feeling more comfortable on the forward line. As a new player, she's getting valuable experience with her new teammates. Also, McKenzie Joyner has fit in nicely on the back line. She is picking up on the little things that have made our team successful defensively.
"We're looking forward to getting back on the practice field. The upcoming trip to Los Angeles (April 3-4) will give us feedback on how we're doing."
