SALT LAKE CITY - The Ute women's soccer team opened its spring season last Saturday at the BYU Indoor Invitational in Provo, Utah. In the tournament played at BYU's recently-opened indoor facility, Utah faced Utah Valley State College, Utah State and Dixie College. The games were shortened from 90 to 50 minutes to accommodate the multi-game schedule.
The tournament marked the college debut of Ute forward Adele Letro. The Sacramento, Calif., native signed with the Utes in 2003 but did not begin classes until this January.
The Utes have 16 returning players participating during the spring season. Of 14 available to play, nine are freshman, one is a sophomore and two are juniors. Katie Battazzo, who played as a freshman in 2002 and took a redshirt year last season, is still coming back from a knee injury sustained in November 2002. Esther Imotan is recovering from a torn ALC suffered after this past season. Amanda Feigt, the 2003 MWC Freshman of the Year, is not with the team this spring while running track.
Utah continues its spring tournament schedule Saturday, March 6 at De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif. The Utes play the University of San Francisco at 4:00 p.m. and California at 7:00 p.m.
On April 3, the Utes take on Loyola Marymount of the West Coast Conference in Los Angeles at 10:00 a.m. The following day the Utes play another WCC opponent, Pepperdine, in Temecula, Calif., at the SC Premier Collegiate Soccer Tournament. The game is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and will be played at the John Blanche Memorial Soccer Complex. Other schools participating in the tournament include USC, UC Santa Barbara, New Mexico, Wyoming, Cal Poly, San Diego State, Loyola Marymount and the University of San Diego.
Utah finishes its spring season on April 11 at the BYU Outdoor Tournament. That schedule has not been finalized.
"The focus in the spring is on the individual improvement of each player," says Ute head coach Rich Manning. "We are constantly working to help each player reach her potential, both technically and tactically. During the spring we are also always working on developing communication, leadership, and confidence for the upcoming season. We had a terrific 2003 season, but now it is time to start preparing for 2004."
"We have a very challenging spring schedule against some highly regarded teams," continues Manning. "It is always our goal to play against the best possible competition, and we feel we will get outstanding competition by competing against the schools we have scheduled."
