SALT LAKE CITY - Utah women's soccer will face six NCAA Tournament teams and host the inaugural Utah Fall Classic in 2004 as the season schedule was announced today by head coach Rich Manning.
Utah's lineup of nonconference opponents feature the defending champions from the Pac 10 (UCLA), Big 12 (Colorado) and Sun Belt (Denver). The Utes open the season on Aug. 27 against Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. The Cardinal is the first of six teams on the schedule that made the 2003 NCAA Tournament. Utah will also face UCLA and San Diego on the road, Colorado and Denver on a neutral field, and BYU at home.
In their first-ever Utah Fall Classic, the Utes play San Francisco on Sept. 3 at 4:00 p.m. and Oregon on Sept. 5 at 1:00 p.m. Weber State is also in the tournament field.
"I'm very excited about our first tournament here at the U.," said Manning. "We have Oregon of the Pac 10 and USF of the West Coast Conference coming in, two good teams from the nation's best conferences. It will be a great Labor Day weekend of action for our fans to see."
Utah begins its conference schedule against UNLV on Oct. 7 at 3:00 p.m. at Ute Field. The Utes close out the regular season against instate rival BYU at home on Oct. 30 at 1:00 p.m. The Mountain West Conference Tournament takes place Nov. 3-6 in Provo, Utah.
"We have a challenging season ahead of us," said Manning. "I know that our players are excited about this fall's games. On the heels of last year's success, it is important that we continue to progress as a program. We will play five nonconference teams that made the 2003 NCAA Tournament. This will definitely toughen us up for Mountain West conference play. With a few wins, it will also give us a chance to earn an at-large bid to this year's NCAA Tournament. We are looking forward to some great games."
As the phased renovation of Ute Field continues, the facility will be enclosed and admission charged for the first time this year. Season ticket information will be available soon on this website.
