SALT LAKE CITY - The Ute women's soccer team will begin the 2004 season ranked among the top teams in the country. Soccer Buzz Magazine listed Utah at No. 18 in the nation and fifth in the West Region in its preseason polls released on Wednesday. This is the first time in the program's history the Utes have appeared in a preseason national poll. Utah was the only Mountain West Conference team ranked in Soccer Buzz's Top 30. Among the Utes' opponents this season, UCLA was ranked 16th and Colorado came in 17th. Stanford, which Utah will face in the season opener at Palo Alto, Calif., on Aug. 27, was listed among teams receiving votes. Utah is entering its second season under head coach Rich Manning. The Utes went 16-2-2 overall in 2003, winning the Mountain West Conference championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
