Utah, ranked No. 15 by Soccer America and No. 18 by Soccer Buzz, opens its 2004 season against Stanford on Friday at 7:00 p.m. (PDT) in Palo Alto, Calif. The Utes return to Salt Lake City to take on Gonzaga on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field. Scouting Stanford
The Cardinal, ranked No. 14 by Soccer America, went 10-9-2 last season and placed third in the Pac-10 Conference with a 5-3-1 record. Stanford advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Stanford returns 16 letterwinners and seven starters from last season. Senior goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart allowed 0.79 goals per game last season. Senior forward Marcie Ward returns after sitting out last season as a redshirt. Ward scored 10 goals and had 13 assists in 2002. Paul Ratcliffe is 65-43-9 entering his seventh season as a head coach. The Bulldogs went 11-8-0 last season and placed fifth in the West Coast Conference with a 3-4-0 record. Gonzaga returns 19 letterwinners and all 11 starters from last season. Senior forward Annie Hawkins scored 13 goals and had four assists in 2003. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen allowed 1.48 goals per game last season. Shannon Stiles is 27-49-2 entering her seventh season at Gonzaga and as a head coach. Utes Win Exhibition Game At Idaho State
Sophomore Hailey Marsh scored a goal late in the first half and Erin Pruitt and Amanda Feigt each added one in the second half as Utah defeated Idaho State 3-0 in a scrimmage last Sunday afternoon in Pocatello, Idaho. Utah converted all three of its shots on-goal against Bengal keeper Shannon Boyle and had six shots in the game. Ashley Mason and Glennis Donnelly combined for the shutout in goal for the Utes with Mason making one save. Kim Lloyd, a transfer from UC Irvine, fed Marsh for the Utes' first goal in the 37th minute. In the second half, Pruitt scored on a penalty kick at the 62:30 mark. Whitney Dorsey and Julie Herdic set up Feigt, the 2003 MWC Freshman of the Year, for the third score of the game with just under 14 minutes to play. In The Polls

Rich Manning is 29-6-5 as he begins his third season at Utah. Last season, Manning was named the 2003 West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001). Rich's Remarks
On the Idaho State scrimmage -- "With so many new faces and different personalities on the team, it was just good to get out there in a competitive environment and see where we are. There were areas that we were surprisingly good in, such as ball possession, rhythm and organization. And there were areas that we have a long way to go. Overall, I thought we played well. Hopefully we can continue to bring the group together." On playing Stanford and Gonzaga -- "I think the Pac 10 and the WCC are the two best conferences in the west, so it's always good to go up against those schools." "Stanford is loaded with players who have represented the United States at the youth level. They're experienced and also well coached. Going to the Farm and doing well will be a terrific challenge for us. They have maybe the best goalkeeper in the country in Nicole Barnhart. Marcie Ward is returning from a redshirt season last year, and she is definitely a threat to score against anyone." "Gonzaga is coming off its best season ever. They're hungry for their first-ever (NCAA) playoff berth, and I think they're anticipating a great season. They have two players, Annie and Sarah Hawkins, who are from the Salt Lake area and Judge High School, and will be especially motivated to put on a great performance." Utes First In MWC Preseason Poll
Utah was selected to repeat as the Mountain West Conference champion in a vote by the league's coaches. The Utes collected a total of 35 points and five first-place votes to capture the top position in the poll. BYU, which collected two first-place votes (32 total points), was picked to finish second in the ballot, followed by San Diego State (25), UNLV (21) and Wyoming (14). New Mexico (11) and Air Force (9) rounded out the voting as they were picked to finish sixth and seventh, respectively. Coming Up
The Utes host their first-ever Utah Fall Classic next Friday through Sunday (Sept. 3-5) at Ute Field. Utah plays Friday at 4:00 p.m. against San Francisco and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against Oregon. Weber State is also in the tournament field.
