Volleyball Season Opened with Alumni Match

SALT LAKE CITY - The 2004 University of Utah women's volleyball season is underway. The Utes began the 2004 campaign by taking on the alumni team on Crimson Court this evening. The two tangled for four games with the Utes beating their predecessors, 30-21, 30-24, 30-15, and 30-23. "I thought that the team was pretty sporadic tonight," head coach Beth Launiere said. "It was a good match because there's a difference between a practice and a game. It's hard going against each other and playing someone else was beneficial for us. "We saw some good but we also saw some areas that need work. This will make practice very meaningful." Lyndsey Henderson and Kelsie Kartchner led the attack for the Utes. Henderson tallied 15 kills (nine in the first game) while Kartchner bagged 15. Freshman Kate Robison racked up nine kills (all in the third game) and tallied two service aces. Katrena Ellett finished with six kills. Leading from the back was Connie Dangerfield. She finished with 12 digs to go along with her five assists. Setters Tracy Neumeier and Kartchner led the way with 21 and 27 assists, respectively. The Utes out-hit their rivals, .449-.135, and edged the alumni in team blocks, 6-2. Leading the Utes defense was Amie Toone with four block assists. Utah hit a smooth .565 in the first game and never hit below .367 in any game. The Utes hit .433 in game two, .367 in game three and .457 in game four. The alumni hit .227 in game four but managed percentages of .208 in game one, .152 in game two, and -.120 in game three. The regular season begins when Utah Valley State College comes to town on Wednesday, Sept. 1. Match time on Crimson Court is set for 7 p.m. The Utes will take a four-game road swing through Southern California before they return home on Saturday, Sept. 11, to host Utah State. That match too will start at 7 p.m.
