This Week
The Utes (3-2-1) open a three-game homestand against Boise State (4-2-0) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
Scouting Boise State
The Broncos are 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 on the road this season. Last weekend in its own tournament, Boise State lost to Minnesota 3-0 on Friday and defeated Montana 2-1 on Sunday. Senior forward Kaziah Hill leads BSU with two goals. Freshman midfielder/forward Lisa Balsama has a goal and an assist. Steve Lucas has a 31-43-4 record in his fifth season at Boise State and as a head coach. Utah leads the all-time series with Boise State 1-0-0, defeating the Broncos 4-1 on Sept. 28, 2000 in Salt Lake City.
Last Week
Utah split a pair of games at the Wake Forest adidas Classic, defeating Denver 3-1 on Friday evening and losing to Colorado 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
North Carolina native Lauren Field scored a goal in the sixth minute and the Utes got two more early in the second half in the win over Denver.
Field, a senior forward from nearby High Point playing her first game in her home state, scored the first goal 5:50 into the game. On a short corner kick driven right along the goal line, Kim Lloyd and Whitney Dorsey set up Field, who beat the keeper for her first goal of the season
After Utah dominated play and kept the ball on its end to start the game, Denver scored the first time it crossed midfield. Utah blew the game open early in the second half, getting a goal 2:35 out of halftime and another at the 51:45 mark. Lloyd got her second assist of the day, taking the ball at midfield and slipping a pass behind the defense to a racing Hailey Marsh, who curled it over the charging goalkeeper to break a 1-1 tie. Amanda Feigt scored the Utes' final goal. Feigt received a through pass from Kiley Jones, beat the defender and slotted the ball home to the near post from 20 yards out. Utah outshot Denver 15-4 and had a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Colorado's Katie Griffin scored on a rebound shot midway through the second half to defeat the Utes on Sunday. The Buffaloes' goal was set up by short corner that was played back. Ashlie Mihalcin and Ellen Falender then connected to set up Griffin in front of the goal for a header. After Ute keeper Ashley Mason initially made the save, Griffin put the rebound shot through at the 72:29 mark.
Both goalkeepers were pressured during the game. Mason made six saves, including five in the first half, while Colorado's Jessica Keller made four saves. The Buffaloes outshot the Utes 13-8. Utah committed 17 fouls to CU's nine, but had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Whitney Dorsey, Feigt, Lloyd and Erin Pruitt had one shot on goal each for the Utes.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 32-8-6 in his third season at Utah. Last season, Manning was named the 2003 West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Rich's Remarks
On playing Boise State - "Boise State has gotten off to a very good start, including a win over Montana last weekend. Steve Lucas is a good coach and they will be well organized. We got to know several of their current players through the recruiting process. We have a great deal of respect for them as well."
On the state of the Utes - "We have made some strides in our team defense and in some of our attacking areas. However, we are still looking for better rhythm and cohesiveness in our offense. As a group, we also have yet to develop the discipline and competitive spirit we will need to become a championship-caliber team. This is an important time as we have an entire week of practice to improve in some of these areas. It will be enjoyable to see if we can put it together next Sunday."

? Starting sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Mason, who led the NCAA goals per game last season, returned last weekend after missing the previous two games with a hip flexor. Mason allowed a goal in each game against Denver and Colorado, and made eight saves.
? Utah has given up seven goals this season after allowing only nine last year to rank second in the nation in goals-against average (.436) and fifth in shutout percentage (.650). The Utes have one shutout this season (vs. Oregon 2-0).
? The Utes have had balanced scoring this season with six players accounting for one goal apiece. Sophomore forward Amanda Feigt leads the team with two goals. Kim Lloyd has a team-best three assists.
