Last Week
Utah defeated Boise State 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Ute Field. Lightning caused the game to be delayed 45 minutes at the start and another 30 minutes with 41:31 remaining in the first half.
Sophomore Hailey Marsh got her second goal of the season to open the scoring for Utah in the 16th minute. Kim Lloyd crossed the ball from right to left in front of the net to Marsh, who slotted it into the lower left corner of the goal from eight yards away.
The Utes kept the pressure on Bronco keeper Kim Parker, who made four saves while playing the first half. Amanda Feigt took advantage when the Utes rushed the net 33:24 in, picking up a loose ball and putting it past Parker into the upper right corner. It was the third goal of the season for Feigt, a sophomore from Sandy, Utah.
Utah added one more goal 19 seconds before the half off of a well-executed corner kick. Erin Pruitt played it in from the right side to sophomore Melissa Wayman, who was waiting on the left side. Wayman headed it in from five yards out for her first goal of the year.
Utah had a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks over Boise State. Ashley Mason made four saves, playing the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Utes.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 33-8-6 in his third season at Utah. Last season, Manning was named the 2003 West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Rich's Remarks
On the state of the Utes - "The team continues to improve in all aspects. Our defense is playing with more cohesiveness. Our attacking play is showing more rhythm and aggressiveness. We are starting to develop some mental toughness and competitive spirit. This week's games will provide us another chance to measure ourselves."
On playing Washington State - "Washington State is off to a fantastic start. They have great results against Tennessee (0-0 tie) and Pepperdine (1-0 win), both top teams. They have quality players on all rows. They have a powerful forward in Alix Rustrum, a good play maker in the midfield with Christie Spear, and a terrific goal keeper in Katie Hultin. It should be an exciting game."
On playing Utah State - "Sunday will bring the excitement of the in-state rivalry with Utah State. Megan Mills in goal and Melissa Baggaley in the back form the spine of a very stingy defense. Coach Cairns does a great job and will have her team prepared. It will be a tight game with a great atmosphere for local soccer fans."
