SALT LAKE CITY - Freshman Chelsea Card scored two goals to lead Utah past Washington State 4-1 on Thursday afternoon at Ute Field. Sophomores Melissa Wayman and Hailey Marsh also added goals for the Utes, who improved to 5-2-1 with the victory over their Pac-10 opponent. The Cougars, ranked 19th by Soccer America, fell to 4-2-1.
Wazzu junior keeper Katie Hultin had not allowed a goal in five games before the Utes pounded her for four goals off six shots on goal. After shutting out No. 12 Pepperdine last Friday in a 1-0 win, Hultin was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week.
Utah's first goal was set up on a free kick in the 12th minute. Kim Lloyd sent the ball in from 30 yards out on the left side to Wayman, who was waiting in front of the goal to put it. It was Wayman's second goal in as many games.
Utah scored once more before halftime. Amanda Feigt floated a long pass down the center of the pitch and through the Cougar defense. That left Card with a one-on-one opportunity as she slotted it past Hultin on the lower left side.
The Cougars clawed back into the game in the ninth minute out of halftime. Brooke Bemis set up Haley Miller at the top of the box for a shot at the left side of the net.
The Utes possessed the ball the majority of the remaining minutes and accounted for all four corner kicks in the second half. Utah finished with a 6-4 advantage in corners for the game.
Marsh scored her third goal of the season at the 61:52 mark. Erin Pruitt passed the ball in to Feigt, who crossed it from the left side. Marsh pounced on the deflected ball for the score.
Card got her second goal in the 80th minute, firing from 10 yards out to the lower right corner of the frame. Marsh and Kiley Jones assisted.
Utah outshot Washington State 11-2 and had a 7-1 edge in the second half. The Ute defense was solid, allowing only one shot on goal.
The Utes celebrate Youth Soccer Month on Sunday when they host instate rival Utah State at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
