LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State handed the No. 24-ranked (USA Today/CSTV) University of Utah women's volleyball team its first loss of the season here this evening, 3-1.
Game scores were 31-29, 21-30, 24-30 and 27-30. The Utes fall to 3-1 for the season while the 49ers remain perfect at 3-0.
"It was a great match to get into early in the season," head coach Beth Launiere said. "It was a high level of competition and a tough environment. We still need to learn how to win in these types of matches; tight games, on the road and in a tough environment.
"We still need to grow as a team. We did some good things out there this evening. We just weren't consistent about it."
Long Beach, who hit .250 for the match (58-22-144) spread its attack as it had four players tally double-digit kills. It was led by Robin Miramontes who bagged 15 kills. However, Shelly Sommerfeldt led all attackers with 16 kills. The Utes hit .209 (63-29-163) for the match. Lyndsey Henderson also had twin numbers in the kills department. She finished with 13.
LBSU also stymied the Utah attack, out blocking the visitors, 13-7. Heather Hetzer (two solo, five assisted) and Alexis Crimes (0,7) led the 49ers in blocking with seven each. Amie Toone and Sommerfeldt led Utah with four each.
Kelsie Kartchner led the Utes with 31 assists and Connie Dangerfield had a team-high 15 digs. Danielle Leichliter, who tallied a match-high four aces, also chalked up 13 digs. LBSU's Jillian Mazzarella led all players with a double-double of 21 digs and 45 assists.
Most of game one was a tight contest, with neither team able to maintain more than a one-point lead. The Utes did ward off one LBSU game point and rattled off three straight points of it own to win, 31-29. While game two started out as tight as game one, a 10-1 rally by the home squad gave it a late 25-18 lead. Utah couldn't counter the 49er attack who hit .414 (15-3-29) in the second game to Utah's .229 (14-6-35).
Long Beach led from start to finish in game three and rallied to win in game four. A four-point 49er lead seemed insurmountable to a Utah squad that hit .186 (16-8-43) in the third frame. In game four, the home team clawed its way back to take the match. Trailing since Utah tied it at 5-5, LBSU engineered a late surge and never lost control after tying at 23-23.
Utah takes Sunday off before returning to action on Monday, Sept. 6. The Utes wrap up play in Los Angeles with a match at UC Irvine. Start time is set for 3 p.m.
