Volleyball Rallies for 3-1 Win.

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah volleyball team rallied around its defensive efforts tonight as it picked up the 3-1 conference win over TCU tonight.
Game scores were 27-30, 30-19, 30-27 and 30-17. The Utes up their mark to 10-5 for the year and to 2-2 in Mountain West Conference play. TCU slips to 10-6 and to 0-2.
"I just wanted to come out and compete hard tonight," said head coach Beth Launiere. "We weren't our sharpest but I am happy with how hard we played.
"We had some good practices on Thursday and Friday. It just took a little while to get back into the groove after game one. TCU ran a completely different offense than what we saw (at BYU last Wednesday) and we had to adjust to it."
The Utes held their rivals to a meager .069 hitting and out-blocked them 14.5-6. The Horned Frogs came out hot, hitting .231 in game one but couldn't hit better than .100 for the rest of match.
The trio of Emillie Toone, Lori Baird and Airial Salvo racked up 15 of the team's 23 total blocks. Toone led all players with seven, while Baird and Salvo helped out with four. Setter Shannon Krug also had four total blocks, including one solo.
Offensively, four Utes tallied double-digit kills. Shelly Sommerfeldt led the way in tallying her usual double-double of 14 kills and 13 digs. Danielle Leichliter recorded 13 kills in hitting a match-best .357 while Salvo (11 kills) and Baird (10) also reached twin digits.
Krug set the attack in racking up 45 assists on the night.
Kate Robison had a match- and career-high 17 digs to lead the team from the back row.
TCU came out on fire in the first game. It started the match hitting .700 in racking up an early 6-1 lead. Utah did cut it down to one point, 25-26, but TCU went on a 4-2 run to seal the deal. TCU was still hot in game two as it started racking up kills at .700 clip. However, Utah went on an 11-1 run to take the 15-7 lead. It never trailed as it bagged the 11-point win.
Utah returned from the break and battled back-and-forth in game three for the victory. The Utes led, 21-18, late, but found themselves in the hole, 24-27. Utah pulled it together at the end of the game, reeling off six straight points to bag the 30-27 win. Utah cruised to the game-four victory, leading most of the way and out-hitting TCU, 257-.028.
Anna Vaughn led TCU with 14 kills while Nirelle Hampton turned in a team-best 35 assists. Also leading the Horned Frogs were Loren Barry with 14 digs and Erin Estep with three total blocks.
The Utes return to the road to play conference rivals Wyoming and Colorado State next weekend. The Utes play at Wyo on Friday, Oct. 7, and at Colorado State on Saturday, Oct. 9.
