SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah head baseball coach Bill Kinneberg has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent. Three junior college transfers and one high school senior have signed with the Utes and will join Kinneberg's squad in the spring of 2007.
Utah signed three pitchers, all with local ties. Jarrod Freeman is a senior at Alta High School, while Geoff Wolfgramm and Travis Barnett will both play this spring at Salt Lake Community College. Wolfgramm is from West Jordan, Utah and Barnett is from Castledale, Utah. The Utes' fourth early signee is Nick Lowery, a shortstop from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College. Lowery hails from Driggs, Idaho.
"Jarrod Freeman is probably the best high school pitcher in the state," Kinneberg said of the 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-hander. "He has a good arm and good command, with a very good breaking ball. There is a lot of upside for Jarrod."
Kinneberg is also high on the two junior college pitchers.
"Both Wolfgramm and Barnett have their best pitching in front of them," Kinneberg said. "Wolfgramm has good command of three different pitches and his arm is only going to get better. Barnett can throw from several different arm angles and he's very versatile. We could use him in all roles from starter to short relief."
Lowery was an important addition to the Utah infield, according to Kinneberg.
"Nick is a very good athlete," Kinneberg said. "He can really run. Plus, he fills a need for us at shortstop with Ryan Khoury graduating after this year."
Barnett, Wolfgramm and Lowery will all be juniors when they join the Utes for the 2006-07 school year, while Freeman will be a freshman.
