SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team will present "An Evening with Cal Ripken, Jr." on Jan. 16 at the Sheraton City Centre. The event will serve as a fund-raiser for the Ute baseball program.Ripken will serve as the keynote speaker for the event. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception.
Dinner will be served at 7 p.m., to be followed by a talk from Ripken. Tickets are available for $100. Tables of 10 may be purchased for $1,000. Call Utah Athletics at 801-581-6445 to purchase tickets or make reservations.
"I always enjoy visiting Salt Lake City with my family," Ripken said. "The next time I am there I will be able to help the University of Utah baseball program. College baseball is something that I never had the chance to experience and I wish I had. It seems like it has grown in popularity quite a bit in recent years. Baseball has given me a wonderful platform and I am happy to use that platform to help the Utah baseball program."
"We're thrilled to have Cal Ripken take time out of his busy schedule for this event," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "This is the second year for this event. After having Terry Francona last year, we've hit a home run with the keynote speaker again. Cal's involvement means a great deal to our program and to me personally."
In addition to the Utah baseball fund-raiser, Ripken will be hosting two sessions of the Cal Ripken Utah Baseball Clinic on Jan. 16. The clinic will be operated by International Leadership Group, a local charitable organization dedicated to the advancement and training of youth. The first session of the clinic will be from 9 a.m.-Noon and will be for ages 8-13. The second session is slated for 1-4 p.m. and will be for ages 14-18.
Also taking part in the clinic will be Salt Lake native Zach Sorenson, a former Salt Lake Stinger and current member of the Milwaukee Brewers. Tim Deysu, Director of Baseball Operations for Ripken Baseball, will also be involved in the clinic. Utah baseball players and coaches will also help with instruction at the clinic.
