PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah women's soccer team opened its spring season with three victories at the BYU Spring Indoor Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 26. The Utes defeated UVSC (1-0), Utah State (2-0) and Dixie State College (1-0). Goalkeeper Ashley Mason earned shutouts in the first two games, while Mason and freshman Amy Edman shared the honors in the last game. The 50-minute games were played on a full-size field at the BYU Indoor Facility.
Head coach Rich Manning said it was good to see the team in action again. "We've been working very hard over the last six weeks. It was good to get out and play against someone else. Our offensive possession was very good in spurts, but inconsistent. I think we got some great feedback on things we can improve on. I would like for us to raise our expectations for our level of play as a group and, hopefully, this event will make the team hungry to get back to training so we can get better," Manning explained.
The event marked the comeback of defender Katie Battazzo, who has been out since November of 2002 with a knee injury suffered against BYU in the last Mountain West Conference game of that season. After two and a half years and three surgeries, Battazzo returned to the lineup at center back. Despite wearing a knee brace for protective support, the 2002 all-MWC selection looked good in all three games, tackling well, covering ground, distributing out of the back and organizing the defense.
"Katie's comeback is a tribute to her character and love of the game," said Manning. "She could have packed it in several times and no one would have questioned her. To get her back on the field made Saturday one of the best days in the history of Utah women's soccer. We will continue to work to get her back to playing at an all-conference level."
Utah opened the day with a 1-0 victory over Utah Valley State College. After a sluggish first half, the Utes came back strong in the second period. Two minutes into the second half, forward Hailey Marsh volleyed a shot into the upper right corner of the net after the Wolverines failed to clear a free kick. The Utes showed good ball possession also after the break with Amanda Sanchez, Kiley Jones and newcomer Paola Marsenaro controlling the midfield.
In the 2-0 win over Utah State, Melissa Wayman was the difference as she scored a goal and assisted on the other. The sophomore, who has recovered from a serious abdominal injury suffered last fall, headed home a corner kick from Emily Campbell in the 15th minute to put the Utes on top. After the break, Wayman's header from a free kick bounced off the post and was tapped in by Whitney Dorsey. Mason preserved the final margin late in the game with a diving stop from a close-range Aggie shot.
In the final game, the Utes defeated Dixie State College 1-0. Marsenaro scored the game-winner in the 20th minute when her first-time shot from the top of the box whistled into the upper left-hand corner. Utah showed flashes of great ball possession and a quartet of outside backs, McKenzie Joyner, Melissa Crespo, Emily Campbell and Tasia Duarte, got forward and created problems for the Dixie defense. Edman got her first game action at goalkeeper, shutting down the Rebels in the second half.
The Utes will return to action this Saturday (March 5) as they travel to Las Vegas to participate in UNLV's outdoor invitational. BYU and UC Riverside will play in the event in addition to Utah and UNLV.
