LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Ute women's soccer team participated in their second competition of spring play at UNLV's Outdoor Invitational on Saturday, March 5. The Utes began the day by playing to a 1-1 draw with host UNLV in a full 90-minute match. The Utes then defeated UC Riverside 2-1 in a 45-minute contest, followed by a 1-0 loss to BYU in a second 45-minute contest.
Head Coach Rich Manning said that the day was productive in identifying strengths in Utah's game at the moment and areas that need to be improved upon. "Overall, the effort and quality of play were very good last weekend. We moved the ball well at times and improved in our rhythm and attacking play. I was especially pleased about how our defenders and midfielders were able to get forward and help us create chances.
"Defensively, Ashley Mason was terrific in goal," Manning continued. "Her play and leadership have been outstanding this spring. We ran into some problems defensively against BYU and UNLV which we will have to go back and fix in training. But it was good to get out and play some top quality teams."
The first match of the day proved to be an exciting one with good play and ample scoring opportunities for both Utah and UNLV. Early in the game it was the Rebels who threatened to score as Mason was forced to come up with two crucial saves in the 19th and 28th minute of play.
The Utes came on strong soon after with a near-miss by Whitney Dorsey in a one-on-one attempt. Utah continued the offensive pressure and was rewarded with a corner-kick. The ensuing kick, taken by Emily Campbell, was perfectly placed and found the head of Melissa Wayman for the Utes first goal of the day.
It did not take long for UNLV to equalize however, as the Rebels scored shortly before halftime, making the score 1-1 going into the second half. Utah continued to press for another tally in the second half and created some good scoring opportunities but were unable to put another goal away.
In the 2-1 win over UC Riverside the Utes got off to a bit of a slow start but were still able to control possession and keep the ball in UC Riverside's end. Amy Edman received her second game action at goalkeeper and did well to prevent any scoring opportunities for Riverside. Kiley Jones also helped the Utes control midfield play and defenders Tasia Duarte and Emily Campbell did well to get forward offensively.
Chelsea Card opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when she was able to hit a well-placed shot to the left side of the goal from 12 yards out. Riverside received a direct free kick soon after and were able to capitalize on the scoring opportunity with a 25-yard shot to the far post. Amanda Sanchez scored the game-winner in the 42nd minute with a left-footed rocket from 22 yards out.
In the final game, the Utes fell to BYU 1-0 as the Utes showed inconsistent possession. Goalkeeper Ashley Mason did well to prevent some good scoring opportunities for BYU, highlighted by a great save in the sixth minute off of a shot by BYU forward Bobbi Tillotson. Ten minutes later, Mason made a great one-on-one save after Jaime Rendich broke thru the Utah defense.
The only scoring of the match came in the 23rd minute when Carolyn Swenson was able to collect and finish a crossed ball into Utah's net. The Utes were unable to muster any threatening scoring opportunities following the goal, resulting in the Utes first loss of the spring season.
The Utes return to action on April 2 with an Alumni Event scheduled to be held in the Spence Eccles Indoor Facility. The Utes then travel to BYU's Outdoor Invitational on April 9 and conclude their spring season in Arizona with games against University of Arizona (April 16) and Arizona State (April 17).
