Utah Women's Soccer Announces 2005 Schedule

SALT LAKE CITY - Ute Soccer Field will be illuminated for the first time this fall as four of Utah's nine home games will be played under the lights. The complete 2005 schedule was announced today by Ute head coach Rich Manning.
As the University of Utah continues to make improvements to Ute Field, four light towers were erected at the corners of pitch late last fall and will be powered-up for the 2005 season.
"We are chomping at the bit to get out and play next fall," said Manning. "With the lights going up at Ute Soccer Field, we expect to have an electric environment for our home games. We have had great fan support over the last couple of years and, with the ability to have games in the evening when more people can attend, it will be even better this season. We did not finish our home season well last year and the players are committed to playing better and getting results in front of our supporters."
Utah will face four NCAA Tournament teams from last year in Arizona, California, Pepperdine and UNLV.
After opening the season with road games at San Francisco on Aug. 26 and Boise State on Aug. 28, the Utes have four consecutive games in Salt Lake City. Utah opens its home schedule against UVSC on Sept. 3 at 1 p.m., followed by Idaho on Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
The first night game at Ute Field is against Purdue on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. The Boilermakers made the NCAA field in 2002 and `03 before youthfulness and injuries led to a 10-10 mark last season. Denver, another perennial NCAA Tournament team looking to bounce back from an off year, comes to Salt Lake City on Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
The Utes compete in the University of Arizona's tournament on Sept. 16 and 18, facing the Wildcats and Cal State Fullerton. Arizona advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament and tied for the Pac-10 championship in 2004. Utah plays at Utah State on Sept. 22.
Utah hosts California on Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. The Golden Bears, who placed fourth in the Pac-10 Conference and made the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year, are expected to be ranked in the preseason Top 25 poll.
Utah closes out its non-league schedule on the road against West Coast Conference programs Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, respectively. Pepperdine played in the first round of the NCAA's last season.
Utah opens its Mountain West Conference schedule with four home games. The Utes welcome TCU, a newcomer to the league in 2005, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. The Utes then host New Mexico on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m., Wyoming on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. and Air Force on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
The Utes then play three straight conference road games, including archrival BYU in the final game of the regular season on Oct. 28 in Provo, Utah. UNLV, the defending Mountain West regular-season champion, hosts the conference tournament Nov. 2-5 in Las Vegas, Nev.
"We have another challenging schedule in store," points out Manning. "We have set high goals and want to prove ourselves by playing the best. We have two opponents from the Pac-10 and three from the West Coast Conference, which annually are two of the best conferences in the country. Teams such as Purdue, Denver, California, Arizona and Pepperdine will prepare us well for conference play."
"The Mountain West Conference will be wide open again this year," Manning continues. "BYU will be back playing at a high level. UNLV and San Diego State had great seasons and showed signs of staying at the top. Wyoming improves every year. New Mexico and Air Force always give us trouble as well. It will be fun to have a new team, TCU, in the race. All in all, there will be some great competition."
Utah returns 10 starters and 16 letterwinners from last year's team that went 13-6-3, won the Mountain West Conference Tournament and advanced to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament. Manning will also add five newcomers and four other players who sat out last season.
"The 2005 Utes will be a fun team to watch and one that is capable of tremendous success," says Manning. "We have a talented group of players on our roster. We have gotten some people healthy and we showed improvement in the spring. This is the most excited I've seen our team entering the summer. The players did not want to go home and cannot wait for August."
