COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --Utah senior second baseman Doug Beck and - BYU junior third baseman Brandon Taylorwere named Mountain West Conference Co-Players of the Week Monday. San Diego State junior lefthander Alex Hinshaw earned MWC pitcher of the week accolades.
Beck, a Denver, Colo., product, led the Utes to a 4-0 record on the week, including a three-game series sweep over New Mexico. In game one, he went 2-for-4 as Utah beat the Lobos, 5-2. He followed in game two with another 2-for-4 performance, including a RBI double in the decisive five-run fifth inning that pushed Utah ahead for good in its 8-4 win. Beck concluded his week hitting for the cycle as part of a 6-for-7, nine RBI outing in the Utes 20-13 win. His nine RBI are a Utah team season-high and one off the MWC's single-game mark, while his six hits tied the conference record for hits in a game for the second straight week (BYU's Taylor also tied the record last week). For the week, Beck went 11-for-19 (.526) from the plate, with a home run, three doubles, a triple, 10 RBI and three runs scored with a slugging percentage of 1.000.
Taylor, from Orem, Utah, helped the Cougars to three wins last week. He belted three home runs, two doubles, a triple and hit for the cycle for the second time in less than a week, tying an NCAA record, and becoming only the third player in NCAA history to hit for the cycle twice in a season. He started the week with a 2-for-4, one run scored performance in game one vs. non-conference opponent Northern Colorado. His cycle came in the opening game vs. conference foe Air Force, where he went 5-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored in BYU's 17-2 win. In game two vs. the Falcons, Taylor hit his second solo homer of the day, driving in a run and scoring a run of his own. He concluded the series with a 3-for-5 effort, hitting his third home run of the series with three RBI and three runs scored in BYU's 17-9 victory. For the week, Taylor hit .458 (11-for-24) with eight RBI, eight runs scored and had a slugging percentage of 1.000.
Hinshaw, from Claremont, Calif., recorded his fifth win of the year as he struck out a career-high 14 batters in a 7-3 victory over UNLV. He allowed just two earned runs and four hits in 7.0 innings pitched. Hinshaw's win is his fourth straight in league play and he set a new SDSU career-high in strikeouts for the third time in his last four starts.
