SALT LAKE CITY -- The defense of the Mountain West Conference title is on the horizon for the University of Utah volleyball team.
The 2005 Utes return nine letterwinners and four starters from last season's team that went 24-7 overall and 13-1 in league play. Among their ranks are reigning all-conference pick Shelly Sommerfeldt and the MWC Libero of the Year Connie Dangerfield.
Fans will have 12 chances to check out their Utes at Crimson Court in 2005. Highlighting the home dates are Top-25 programs Colorado State and Santa Clara. CSU comes to town on Saturday, Nov. 12, and Santa Clara on Saturday, Sept. 17. SCU is participating in the three-day Hampton Inn Utah Classic at Crimson Court. Idaho is the third team in the round-robin tournament along with the Utes and SCU.

Conference and intrastate rival Brigham Young comes to Crimson Court on Friday, Nov. 4. The Utes have dominated that series as of late, reeling off 10 straight wins against the Cougars. Utah snagged a pair from its rival last year, including a 3-0 sweep in Salt Lake City.
The season opens with a pair of home games on Aug. 26 and 30 when Idaho State and Weber State come to the U.
The Mountain West Conference Tournament will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., from Nov. 24-26. The MWC has arranged a deal for fans to come out and watch top-notch postseason volleyball. By calling the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas and identifying yourself as an MWC volleyball fan, you'll receive a room for $109.00 per night from Nov. 20-24 and for $159.00 per night from Nov. 25-26. The home calendar also features numerous promotions, starting with the first day. The Aug. 26 match against ISU is Kickoff the Season with Camp Reunion night. Any camper that went to the 2005 Utah Volleyball Camp and received a camp reunion voucher has a chance to come back to watch the Utah Volleyball team free of charge.
Other fan promotions during the season include: Family/Church night on Thursday, Sept. 15 versus Idaho, where families can pick up a pass at their local church; Operation Sell Out on Friday, Nov. 11 against Wyoming, where all tickets are just $2; and Senior & Fan Appreciation night on Saturday, Nov. 12 versus CSU, where Utah bids farewell to its seniors and fans can have the chance to win prizes. Other opportunities with the volleyball team include the Spiker Club. Fans can join the Spiker Club for $100 and receive a season ticket, a t-shirt, and attend several post-match receptions, among other benefits. The Corporate Plan, for $300, includes 75 generic match tickets and in-game promotions.
