This Week
Utah opens its 2005 season with a pair of road games. The Utes face San Francisco at Negoesco Stadium in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday at 7:00 p.m. (PDT) and Boise State at the Boas Tennis & Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho, on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (MDT).
In the Polls
? Utah is ranked 26th in the Soccer Buzz Top 30 preseason poll and seventh in the West Region.
Utah 2005 Outlook
The Utes return 10 starters and 15 letterwinners overall from a team that went 13-6-3, won the Mountain West Conference Tournament for the second straight year, and advanced to their third consecutive NCAA Tournament in 2004. The Utes placed fourth in the MWC during the regular season with a 3-2-1 record.
Senior forward Kim Lloyd earned second team all-Mountain West Conference honors in 2004. Lloyd led the Utes with eight assists and contributed two goals. Junior forward Amanda Feigt was named first team all-Mountain West Conference a year ago. Feigt tied for the team lead with six goals and contributed five assists. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Mason had six shutouts last season. Mason ranked fourth in the MWC in goals against average (0.91) and sixth in saves per game (3.89) in 2004. In two seasons at Utah, she ranks third in career saves (132) and third in shutouts (14.2). Sophomore midfielder Kiley Jones made the Soccer Buzz all-West Region freshman team and second team all-Mountain West Conference last season. She had a goal and four assists in 2004.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 42-12-8 (.742) entering his fourth year at Utah. Last season he guided Utah to its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, its second consecutive MWC Tournament title and a 13-6-3 overall record. In 2003, Manning was named the West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Scouting San Francisco
The Dons return five starters and 16 letterwinners from last year's team that went 10-7-3 and placed fourth in the West Coast Conference with a 3-4-0 record. San Francisco opens its season against Utah.
Chelsea Hunt (F, 5-9, Jr.) was a second team all-WCC pick last season, recording nine goals and three assists. Stephanie Gray (M, 5-6, Sr.) had four goals and six assists in 2004. Head coach Pamela Kalinoski has a 33-41-5 career record entering her fifth season at USF.
Utah faced San Francisco for the first time last season, playing the Dons to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 3 at Ute Field.
Scouting Boise State
The Broncos return six starters and 17 letterwinners from last year's team that went 9-8-2 and placed seventh in the WAC with a 2-4-2 record. Boise State opens its regular season against Utah after playing an exhibition game against Northwest Nazarene last Saturday.
Kim Parker (GK, 5-6, Jr.) was a second team all-WAC selection in 2004. She made 73 saves and had a 1.08 goals against average in 18 games. Molly McDonald (D, 5-10, Jr.) had two goals and three assists last season. Head coach Steve Lucas has a 36-49-7 career record entering his sixth season at Boise State.
Utah leads the all-time series with Boise State 2-0-0 with both of those games taking place in Salt Lake City. In their last meeting, the Utes defeated the Broncos 3-0 on Sept. 19, 2004 at Ute Field.
Injury Report
? Sophomore forward Chelsea Card had arthroscopic surgery on both knees this summer and is expected to ready for game action by Sept. 1.
? Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Amy Edman suffered a torn ACL last April and is out indefinitely.
? Freshman goalkeeper Lynzee Lee suffered a broken leg in June and is expected to be out until mid September.
? Freshman midfielder Danielle Sample is expected to be out until mid September with a torn ACL.
Rich's Remarks
On the development of the team - "The team has steadily improved through the first two weeks of training. We have a talented team that will play a very entertaining style of soccer. There are several key players returning from injuries last year and it's great to see them on the field again. I'm sure they'll have some extra competitive juices flowing as we begin."
"The team has also matured from last year. There is a core of players who have gone through some ups and downs. They seem committed to making this a great season."
On playing San Francisco - "USF is a hard working team that will be tough to beat on its home field. They have some great speed up top that can threaten any defense. Their players are also sharpened each year by playing in the WCC, one of the top conferences in the country. It's a good way to start off and see where we are at."
On playing Boise State - "Boise State has good team speed and handles the ball well. They will be out to avenge their loss to us last season. The game will mark a homecoming for Katie Battazzo. Katie is returning to the field after a two-year absence with a knee injury. This is a very special game for us and I know we'll perform well for Katie."
Utah Picked To Win Mountain West
Utah received seven first-place votes and was selected to win the 2005 Mountain West Conference women's soccer regular-season championship in the preseason poll of the league's coaches.
The Utes collected a total of 49 points to capture the top spot in the poll. San Diego State, which fell to the Utes in the MWC Soccer Championship final last year, and BYU tied for second place in the poll with 39 points. Last year's regular-season champion UNLV was picked fourth (31 points), while newcomer TCU was fifth (21 points). Wyoming was sixth (18 points), followed by New Mexico (16 points) and Air Force (11 points).
Ute Notes
? During the 2005 season, the Utes will face four NCAA Tournament teams from last year in Arizona, California, Pepperdine and UNLV.
? Four of Utah's nine home games will be played at night with lights being powered-up at Ute Field for the first time in 2005. After opening the season with road games at San Francisco on Aug. 26 and Boise State on Aug. 28, Utah opens its home schedule against UVSC on Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. The first night game at Ute Field is against Purdue on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
? Utah's 13 wins in 2004 equaled the second-best mark in the 10-year history of the program. The Utes also got 13 wins in 2002 (13-4-3), 2000 (13-7-1) and 1999 (13-7-0). Utah set the school single-season wins record with 16 victories in 2004.
? In the final 2004 NCAA statistics, Utah ranked 59th in goals against average (.919), tied for 95th in shutout percentage (0.36) and tied for 139th in scoring offense (1.50 goals per game). Utah ranked 37th in the nation in attendance during its first season of charging admission to home games. The Utes drew 6,090 fans for an average of 609 fans over 10 games.
? Soccer Buzz magazine has rated the Utes' 2005 recruiting class as the 37th-best in the nation. This is the third consecutive year Utah's recruiting class has been rated in the top 50 in the nation. Soccer Buzz magazine has also named signees Lynzee Lee (GK, Kalispell, Mont.) and Katy Reineke (M, Salt Lake City) to its list of Top 100 high school recruits in the nation. Lee and Reineke, along with Jen Christoffers (F, Phoenix, Ariz.), have experience on the West Region Olympic Development Program team.
? Utah is 5-2 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams in three seasons under Rich Manning. In the Utes' only game against a ranked team in 2004, they defeated No. 7 UCLA (2-1) on Oct. 1. Utah was 2-1 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams in 2003. The Utes defeated No. 5 Florida (1-0) on Sept. 28 and No. 17 Michigan (4-1) on Aug. 31 at Ute Field. They lost at No. 6 Texas A&M (1-0) on Sept. 5.
Coming Up
Utah opens a four-game homestand with two games over Labor Day weekend. The Utes host UVSC on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1:00 p.m. (MST) and Idaho on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 1:00 p.m. (MST) at Ute Field.
