SALT LAKE CITY - Utah junior goalkeeper Ashley Mason has been named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Mason, a Sunnyvale, Calif., native, helped give the Utes a perfect 2-0 start to their season with a 1-0 overtime win at San Francisco and a 3-0 win at Boise State last weekend. Mason saved nine shots combined in the two shutout efforts.
In the USF game, Mason saved a shot on a breakaway opportunity in the first half and a penalty kick in the 70th minute to keep the game scoreless. She had seven saves against the Dons. Mason was solid once again with two saves against Boise State.
Utah, ranked No. 26 in the Soccer Buzz magazine preseason Top 30 poll, opens its home schedule this weekend. The Utes host UVSC on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Idaho on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Ute Field.
