This Week
Utah (2-0-0) begins its 2005 home schedule this weekend, hosting UVSC (0-1-0) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Idaho (0-1-0) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Ute Field.
In the Polls
? Utah moved up four spots to No. 22 in the Soccer Buzz Top 30 poll released on Tuesday. The Utes also climbed two spots to fifth in the Soccer Buzz West Region rankings.
Scouting UVSC
The Wolverines (0-1-0) opened their season with a 1-0 loss to Weber State at home on Friday. Tasha Bell (GK, 5-8, So.) played the entire game, making five saves in addition to allowing one goal. Carolyn Theurer (F, 5-5, Sr.) had six goals and six assists last season. Justin Wagar is serving as UVSC's interim head coach this season. The Utes and the Wolverines met for the first time in 2004 with Utah winning 2-1 on Oct. 16 in Salt Lake City.
Scouting Idaho
The Vandals (0-1-0) fell to Washington State 1-0 in overtime at home last Sunday afternoon to begin their 2005 season. They will play at Portland State on Friday before coming to Salt Lake City. Head coach Peter Showler is in his first year at Idaho. Jenny Springer (F, 5-9, Jr.) scored a team-best three goals last season. Lindsay Smith (GK, 5-6, Sr.) gave up an average of 1.86 goals per game last season and made 87 saves. Utah and Idaho will meet for the first time on Sunday.
Last Week
Utah swept a two-game road trip to open the season, beating San Francisco on Friday night and Boise State on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Kiley Jones scored on a breakaway opportunity in the 96th minute to give Utah a 1-0 overtime win over San Francisco. Melissa Wayman was credited with the assist. Utah outshot San Francisco 16-7. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Mason made seven saves for the Utes, playing the entire game. One of her saves was on a penalty kick in the 60th minute. Utah had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. San Francisco committed 17 fouls to Utah's 13.
Utah scored twice in the first 18 minutes and got its second straight shutout performance from Mason to cruise to a 3-0 win against Boise State. After getting an own goal off Boise State in the 16th minute, Whitney Dorsey converted a penalty kick two minutes later. Senior forward Kim Lloyd scored in the final goal in the 89th minute. Adele Letro assisted on the goal. Mason made two saves in goal. The Utes outshot the Broncos 15-5. Boise State had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks and 10 fouls to Utah's nine.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 44-12-8 in his fourth year at Utah. Last season he guided Utah to its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, its second consecutive MWC Tournament title and a 13-6-3 overall record. In 2003, Manning was named the West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Rich's Remarks
On playing the first home games of the season - "We are fired up to get going here at home. We have several players who have not played in front of the home crowd in a long time. We also have a few freshmen who are eager to perform here at Ute Field. I think the fans will see a hungry team that is eager to build on our two victories last weekend."
On playing UVSC - "UVSC has built up a solid group of players in only a couple of years of playing Division I soccer. They came here and gave us an excellent game last year. I expect much of the same on Saturday."
On playing Idaho - "Idaho has a new coach, Pete Showler, who has injected the team with confidence. They gave Washington State a terrific test last weekend before falling in overtime. They will be well organized and a tough team to break down on defense."
Mason Named MWC Defensive Player of the Week
Utah junior goalkeeper Ashley Mason has been named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Mason, a Sunnyvale, Calif., native, helped give the Utes a perfect 2-0 start to their season by saving nine shots in two shutout efforts last weekend.
In the San Francisco game, Mason saved a shot on a breakaway opportunity in the first half and a penalty kick in the 70th minute to keep the game scoreless. She had seven saves against the Dons. Mason was solid once again with two saves against Boise State.
Injury Report
? Sophomore forward Chelsea Card had arthroscopic surgery on both knees this summer and is expected to ready for game action this weekend.
? Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Amy Edman suffered a torn ACL last April and is out indefinitely.
? Freshman goalkeeper Lynzee Lee suffered a broken leg in June and is expected to be out until mid September.
? Freshman midfielder Danielle Sample is expected to be out until mid September with a torn ACL.
Ute Notes
? Utah improved to 3-1 in season openers under head coach Rich Manning with its 1-0 overtime win at San Francisco on Aug. 26.
? During the 2005 season, the Utes will face four NCAA Tournament teams from last year in Arizona, California, Pepperdine and UNLV.
? Four of Utah's nine home games will be played at night with lights being powered-up at Ute Field for the first time in 2005. The first night game at Ute Field is against Purdue on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
? Utah's 13 wins in 2004 equaled the second-best mark in the 10-year history of the program. The Utes also got 13 wins in 2002 (13-4-3), 2000 (13-7-1) and 1999 (13-7-0). Utah set the school single-season wins record with 16 victories in 2004.
? In the final 2004 NCAA statistics, Utah ranked 59th in goals against average (.919), tied for 95th in shutout percentage (0.36) and tied for 139th in scoring offense (1.50 goals per game). Utah ranked 37th in the nation in attendance during its first season of charging admission to home games. The Utes drew 6,090 fans for an average of 609 fans over 10 games.
? Soccer Buzz magazine rated the Utes' 2005 recruiting class as the 37th-best in the nation. This is the third consecutive year Utah's recruiting class has been rated in the top 50 in the nation. Soccer Buzz magazine has also named signees Lynzee Lee (GK, Kalispell, Mont.) and Katy Reineke (M, Salt Lake City) to its list of Top 100 high school recruits in the nation. Lee and Reineke, along with Jen Christoffers (F, Phoenix, Ariz.), have experience on the West Region Olympic Development Program team.
? Utah is 5-2 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams in four seasons under Rich Manning. In the Utes' only game against a ranked team in 2004, they defeated No. 7 UCLA (2-1) on Oct. 1. Utah was 2-1 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams in 2003. The Utes defeated No. 5 Florida (1-0) on Sept. 28 and No. 17 Michigan (4-1) on Aug. 31 at Ute Field. They lost at No. 6 Texas A&M (1-0) on Sept. 5.
Utah Picked To Win Mountain West
Utah received seven first-place votes and was selected to win the 2005 Mountain West Conference women's soccer regular-season championship in the preseason poll of the league's coaches.
The Utes collected a total of 49 points to capture the top spot in the poll. San Diego State, which fell to the Utes in the MWC Soccer Championship final last year, and BYU tied for second place in the poll with 39 points. Last year's regular-season champion UNLV was picked fourth (31 points), while newcomer TCU was fifth (21 points). Wyoming was sixth (18 points), followed by New Mexico (16 points) and Air Force (11 points).

Utah plays its first-ever night game at Ute Field, hosting Purdue on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7:00 p.m. The Utes conclude their four-game homestand against Denver on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1:00 p.m.
