SALT LAKE CITY - Senior outside hitter Shelly Sommerfeldt won Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Week honors in leading the University of Utah volleyball team to a pair victories last weekend.
Sommerfeldt helped Utah to a 2-0 record at the Hampton Inn Classic which included a five-game upset win over 17th-ranked Santa Clara.
She had a double-double in both matches, starting with a 20-kill, 17-dig performance against Idaho. She also had four total blocks to go along with her .486 hitting percentage.
She followed that outing with a season-high 22 kills in Utah's victory over the nationally-ranked Broncos. Sommerfeldt completed her second straight double-double with 15 digs and added four total blocks, an assist and a service ace, on the way to being named tournament MVP.
For the week, she averaged 4.67 kills, 3.56 digs and 0.89 blocks per game, while adding three assists and two service aces. Sommerfeldt has collected double-doubles in five of her last six matches and leads the Utes in kills (121) and kills per game (3.46) this season.
She is the second Ute to garner the honor this season. Freshman standout Airial Salvo landed the honor after leading the Utes to a 3-0 season-opening victory over Idaho State.
Brigham Young's Lindsy Hartsock was also honored alongside of Sommerfeldt this week.
The Utes return to action this Tuesday, Sept. 21, to play at Utah Valley State. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
