SALT LAKE CITY -- University of Utah head baseball coach Bill Kinneberg welcomed 18 new players as the Utes began fall workouts last weeekend. Utah opened the fall on Saturday as preparations for the 2006 season began.
While the Utes added a large number of new players, there is a strong nucleus of returning players to build around, according to Kinneberg.
"Jay Brossman, Ryan Khoury, John Welsh and Brian Lane all had really good summers," Kinneberg said. "The middle of our order from last year is back, along with Welsh, who hit leadoff for most of the year. With more experience, we're hoping those guys will continue to improve offensively."
Kinneberg says local product Corey Shimada, Erich Kemp and Josh Bell should be among the newcomers to help immediately in the lineup.
"Offensively, we added a few weapons," Kinneberg said. "Shimada gives us some speed, Kemp, Brett Stringham and Scott Malone have a chance to give us some more pop and some power in our lineup."
On the mound, Utah has 10 new hurlers, which Kinneberg hopes will lead to improved pitching next season.
"We have a chance to be much better on the hill," Kinneberg said. "We have a chance to develop some depth on our pitching staff, which we just didn't have last year."
The Ute head coach said Eric King, Rory James, Jason Williams, Lucas Trinniman and Brandon Ast will all be counted on to help shore up some of last season's pitching woes.
The Ute baseball team will wrap up its fall camp on Oct. 7. Kinneberg says the team will scrimmage nearly every day throughout the fall, trying to get more game-simulated experience. Utah was 19-36 last season, with a 10-20 mark in the Mountain West Conference.
