This Week
Utah (6-2) plays its third straight road game against Utah State (2-4-2) on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. in Logan, Utah. The Utes then host No. 9 California (6-1-1) and celebrate Youth Soccer Month on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.

? Utah is among the teams receiving votes in the Soccer Buzz Top 30 poll. The Utes are also ranked 12th in the Soccer Buzz West Region rankings.

Scouting Utah State
The Aggies are 2-4-2, coming off two home wins last week. Utah State defeated San Francisco 3-1 on Thursday and Idaho State 2-0 on Saturday. Charity Weston (M, 5-4, Jr.) has three goals and two assists this season. Dana Peart (F, 5-1, So.) also has three goals and an assist. Kelli Allred (GK, 5-8, So.) has a 1.55 goals against average and 25 saves in seven games. Head coach Heather Cairns has a 18-22-5 career record in her third season at Utah State.
Utah is 6-1 all-time against Utah State, including a 2-1 mark in Logan, Utah. Last season, the Utes defeated the Aggies 1-0 in overtime on Sept. 26 in Salt Lake City.
Scouting California
The Golden Bears, ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, are 6-1-1 heading into their game at BYU on Friday night. California split a pair of home games last weekend, defeating Pacific 3-0 on Wednesday and losing to No. 4 Santa Clara 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday. Liz Eisenberg (F, 5-1, Sr.) has a team-best six goals and one assist. Lindsay Clute (M, 5-5, Sr.) has scored five goals. Ashley Sulprizio (GK, 6-1, Sr.) has a 0.41 goals against average and 19 saves in seven games this season. Head coach Kevin Boyd has a 102-55-14 career record in his ninth season at Cal.
Utah lost both of its previous games against Cal. The teams last met on Sept. 18, 1998 in Seattle, Wash., with the Golden Bears winning 4-0.
Last Week
Utah lost both games in the Four Points University Plaza Arizona Soccer Classic last weekend in Tucson, Ariz.
The Utes fell to Arizona 1-0 in overtime on Friday night. The Wildcats outshot the Utes 17-12 and had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Ute junior goalkeeper Ashley Mason gave a great effort, making 11 saves. Amanda Feigt had two shots on goal, while Adele Letro, Whitney Dorsey, Katy Reineke and Kim Lloyd had one shot on goal each.
Utah lost to Cal State Fullerton 4-0 on Sunday. The Titans outshot the Utes 28-7 and had a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks. Mason made nine saves to keep Utah in the game before CSF scored four goals in the final 24 minutes. Amanda Feigt, Melissa Wayman and Amanda Sanchez had shots on goal for the Utes.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 48-14-8 in his fourth year at Utah. Last season he guided Utah to its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, its second consecutive MWC Tournament title and a 13-6-3 overall record. In 2003, Manning was named the West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Rich's Remarks
On heading into this week - "We're anxious to get back to work and see if we can correct our mistakes from last weekend. This is an important time of the year during which we need to keep improving our game as we prepare for Mountain West Conference play."
On playing Utah State - "Utah State is always a fun game to play. The Aggies are hard working and have some very talented players. They are a well-coached team and our last couple of games have been good-level soccer with overtime endings. We expect a tough battle on Thursday."
On playing California - "Cal Berkeley is off to a terrific start. They have some great players to watch. Liz Eisenberg, Caroline Lea, Julia Schnugg and Alivia Mazura, among others, are wonderful attacking players. Chioma Igwe is a monster in the midfield. And they are a tough team to score on. It will be a good challenge on Sunday."
Injury Report
? Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Amy Edman suffered a torn ACL last April and is out indefinitely.
? Freshman goalkeeper Lynzee Lee suffered a broken leg in June and is expected to be out at least one more week.
? Freshman midfielder Danielle Sample is out with a torn ACL.

? Before dropping two games last weekend, the Utes had the best start in school history at 6-0.

? The U. had its first night game ever at Ute Field against Purdue on Sept. 9, drawing a season-best crowd of 1,141. Utah will have three other home night games this season.
? Utah faces the second of the four 2004 NCAA Tournament teams on its schedule this Sunday in California. The Utes lost at Arizona (1-0 OT) on Sept. 16. Pepperdine and UNLV are scheduled for later dates.
? Utah's 13 wins in 2004 equaled the second-best mark in the 10-year history of the program. The Utes also got 13 wins in 2002 (13-4-3), 2000 (13-7-1) and 1999 (13-7-0). Utah set the school single-season wins record with 16 victories in 2004.
? Soccer Buzz magazine rated the Utes' 2005 recruiting class as the 37th-best in the nation. This is the third consecutive year Utah's recruiting class has been rated in the top 50 in the nation. Soccer Buzz magazine has also named signees Lynzee Lee (GK, Kalispell, Mont.) and Katy Reineke (M, Salt Lake City) to its list of Top 100 high school recruits in the nation. Lee and Reineke, along with Jen Christoffers (F, Phoenix, Ariz.), have experience on the West Region Olympic Development Program team.
Utah Picked To Win Mountain West
Utah received seven first-place votes and was selected to win the 2005 Mountain West Conference women's soccer regular-season championship in the preseason poll of the league's coaches.
The Utes collected a total of 49 points to capture the top spot in the poll. San Diego State, which fell to the Utes in the MWC Soccer Championship final last year, and BYU tied for second place in the poll with 39 points. Last year's regular-season champion UNLV was picked fourth (31 points), while newcomer TCU was fifth (21 points). Wyoming was sixth (18 points), followed by New Mexico (16 points) and Air Force (11 points).
Coming Up
Utah closes out its nonconference schedule with a pair of games on the West Coast. The Utes play at Pepperdine on Friday, Sept. 30 at 3:00 p.m. (PDT) and at Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1:00 p.m. (PDT).
