Volleyball Drops Five-Gamer to UNM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Utah volleyball team erased a two-game deficit tonight but saw its five-match winning streak come to an end with a five-game loss at New Mexico tonight (30-26, 30-27, 22-30, 18-30, 15-13).
The Utes out-hit the Lobos in the loss, .244-.145, but still drop to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in Mountain West Conference play. The Lobos improve to 9-3 and 1-1.
"I was glad that we came back from a two-game deficit," said Beth Launiere. "But, you can't dig yourself in a hole like that in a conference road match and expect to win.
"We didn't block a single thing in games one and two. Emillie Toone and Whitney Webb came on in game three and started to block for us. That made a difference for us and allowed us to come back."
Four Utes tallied double-digit kills led by Shelly Sommerfeldt's 22. She hit .298 on the night. Lori Baird chimed in with 12 kills in hitting .310 while Kathryn Lovell and Whitney Webb came off the bench to tally 16 and 11 kills, respectively. Webb led the team in hitting .409 on the night, registering only two errors on 22 swings.
Utah hit .160 in the first two games as it fell behind, 2-0, But, it rallied in games three and four to hit .337 in knotting the match at 2-2. However, UNM held on in game five to edge the Utes for the two-point and five-game win.
Shannon Krug set the attack and tallied a double-double in the effort. She recorded 62 assists and chalked up 10 digs in the losing effort. Kate Robison was the team's digs leader with 14.
Baird led the Utes at the net with 10 blocks. Amie Tingey helped out with six total blocks of her own while Webb and Krug tallied five. Utah held the narrow edge at the net, tallying 18 team blocks to UNM's 17.5.
UNM had three Lobos with double-digit kills. Nicole Ryan led the way with 19. Sarah Kwasigroch had 52 assists to lead the home team while Chelsea Sondrup tallied an incredible 12 total blocks. Four Lobos had double-digit digs on the night, two of which tied for match-high honors with 14.
The Utes return to action to face the No. 22-ranked BYU Cougars in Provo, Utah, on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
