This Week
Utah (7-3) closes out its nonconference schedule with a pair of games on the West Coast this weekend. The Utes play No. 10 Pepperdine (8-0-1) at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu, Calif., on Friday at 3:00 p.m. (PDT) and Loyola Marymount (3-4-3) at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (PDT).

Scouting Pepperdine
The Waves, ranked No. 10 in this week's NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, are 8-0-1 after winning two home games last weekend. Pepperdine defeated UNLV 1-0 on Friday and blew out Denver 4-0 on Sunday. The Waves are 4-0 at home this season. Their tie came at SMU (1-1 2OT) on Sept. 18.
Megan Woods (F, Jr.) leads the team with seven goals and four assists. Lindsey Redlin (F, Jr.) has five goals and four assists. Anna Picarelli (GK, Sr.) has a 0.65 goals against average and 46 saves in eight games this season. Head coach Tim Ward has a 92-51-16 career record in eight seasons at Pepperdine.
In their only previous meeting, Utah and Pepperdine played to a 2-2 tie on Sept. 24, 1995 in Malibu, Calif.
Scouting Loyola Marymount
The Lions are 3-4-3 after splitting two home games last weekend. LMU defeated UC Riverside 2-0 on Friday and lost to No. 24 Cal State Fullerton 2-0 on Sunday. The Lions play at USC on Friday before hosting the Utes. Loyola Marymount has been in six overtime games this season, losing three and tying three.
Lori Sims (F, 5-4, Sr.) leads the team with four goals and has two assists. Kelly Lewandowski (F, 5-9, Sr.) has two goals and two assists. Joslyn Slovek (GK, 6-0, So.) has played every minute in goal for the Lions this season, recording a 1.08 goals against average and making 44 saves. Head coach Gregg Murphy is 92-69-20 in his 10th season at LMU and has a 150-121-24 career mark in 16 years. Utah and Loyola Marymount meet for the first time on Sunday.
Last Week
Utah defeated Utah State 3-0 on Thursday afternoon in Logan, Utah, and fell to No. 9 California 1-0 in double overtime at Ute Field on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman forward Adele Letro continued her torrid start to the season by scoring two of the Utes' three goals in the win against Utah State. Amanda Fiegt scored Utah's first goal in the fifth minute after being fed by Whitney Dorsey. Letro scored in the 18th and 73rd minutes with Melissa Wayman assisting on the second goal. Utah had a 16-7 advantage in shots. Goalkeeper Ashley Mason made four saves.
Utah and California battled for over 106 minutes before Dania Cabello got behind the Ute defense and fired a 15-yard shot past Mason to give the Golden Bears the victory. After Utah had outshot California 13-7 through the first overtime period, the Bears got away four shots in the final stanza. Mason made three saves. Corner kicks were 2-1 in favor of Utah.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 49-15-8 in his fourth year at Utah. Last season he guided Utah to its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, its second consecutive MWC Tournament title and a 13-6-3 overall record. In 2003, Manning was named the West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Rich's Remarks
On last week - "We are encouraged by our performances from last week. We put together two solid games at Utah State and against Cal. We were a bit unfortunate not to get a result from the Cal game. But there are some lessons that we are still learning from. Our team is learning to compete together at a high level with great determination. We would still like to finish games stronger and I think we need to improve our consistency in the attack. But we are on the right track."
On this week's games - "This week offers two more terrific challenges. Pepperdine is an excellent team and they couldn't have gotten off to a better start to the season. They are a great possession team and are always tough to beat at home. I love their attacking players, such as Megan Woods and Jenna Fodor. And they have an experienced goal keeper in Anna Picarelli. LMU is another fun team to watch. Lori Sims is a top-notch forward. Alicia Lloyd and others will make it hard for us to score. These games will give us some excellent preparation for the opening of Mountain West Conference play next week." "Laurel, Leslie (assistant coaches) and myself are all from California. Many of our players are also from California. This is a special trip for us and we expect to play well and give our families a good show. It will be a great weekend of soccer."
Injury Report
? Freshman forward Jen Christoffers injured her right knee in Sunday's game against California. She will be examined on Wednesday and is out indefinitely.
? Freshman midfielder Danielle Sample, who had been out all season with a torn ACL, has been cleared to practice with the team.

In the team statistics as of Sept. 26, Utah ranks second in shots (16.10 per game), second in points (5.00 per game), third in goals per game (1.70), second in assists per game (1.60), third in goals against average (0.78), first in saves (5.30 per game), tied for second in shutouts (5), fourth in fouls (11.40 per game), and fifth in corner kicks (2.70 per game).
? In the individual rankings as of Sept. 26, Adele Letro ranks third in shots per game (3.50), second in points per game (1.20), tied for third in goals per game (0.50) and tied for third in game-winning goals ... Melissa Wayman is tied for fifth in assists per game (0.30) ... Ashley Mason is second in saves per game (5.20), tied for second in shutouts (4), and third in goals against average (0.80).
Ute Notes
? Adele Letro leads the Utes with five goals and two assists this season. Jen Christoffers, Amanda Feigt, Kim Lloyd and Melissa Wayman each have two goals. Wayman also has a team-best three assists.
? Utah faces the third of the four 2004 NCAA Tournament teams on its schedule this Friday at Pepperdine. The Utes lost at Arizona (1-0 OT) on Sept. 16 and to California at home (1-0 2OT) on Sept. 25. Utah faces UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev., on Oct. 22.
? Utah is 5-4 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams in four seasons under Rich Manning. In the Utes' two games against a ranked teams this season, Utah lost at No. 22 Arizona 1-0 in overtime on Sept. 16 and fell to No. 9 California a 1-0 in double overtime at home on Sept. 25. In 2004, the Utes won at No. 7 UCLA (2-1) on Oct. 1. Utah was 2-1 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams in both 2002 and `03.

? The Utes had the best start in school history at 6-0 before dropping three of their last four games.
? Against Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 18, Utah gave up four goals for the first time since Florida scored five on Aug. 31, 2001.
? Other than giving up four goals to Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 25, goalkeeper Ashley Mason had allowed just four goals in the other nine games. Mason has made 52 saves with a 0.80 goals against average in 10 games this season.

? Utah is 4-1 at home this season. The U. had its first night game ever at Ute Field against Purdue on Sept. 9, drawing a season-best crowd of 1,141. Utah will have three other home night games this season.
? Utah's 13 wins in 2004 equaled the second-best mark in the 10-year history of the program. The Utes also got 13 wins in 2002 (13-4-3), 2000 (13-7-1) and 1999 (13-7-0). Utah set the school single-season wins record with 16 victories in 2004.
? Soccer Buzz magazine rated the Utes' 2005 recruiting class as the 37th-best in the nation. This is the third consecutive year Utah's recruiting class has been rated in the top 50 in the nation. Soccer Buzz magazine has also named signees Lynzee Lee (GK, Kalispell, Mont.) and Katy Reineke (M, Salt Lake City) to its list of Top 100 high school recruits in the nation. Lee and Reineke, along with Jen Christoffers (F, Phoenix, Ariz.), have experience on the West Region Olympic Development Program team.
Coming Up
Utah opens Mountain West Conference play with four consecutive home games. The Utes begin that stretch by hosting TCU on Thursday, Oct. 6 and New Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Ute Field. Both games kick-off at 7:00 p.m.
