Volleyball Falls to No. 9 Tennessee

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Utah volleyball team dropped its second straight match as fell to the No. 9-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers this evening, 3-0.
Game scores were 30-23, 30-22 and 30-26. The Utes fall to 2-2 for the year while UT improves to 2-0. It was Utah's second and final match of the Tiger Invitational in Columbia, Mo. No. 21 Missouri topped Utah in its first match of the tournament on Friday, 3-0. Missouri and Tennessee do battle on Sunday afternoon.
"We played a lot better this evening," noted head coach Beth Launiere. "We came out and showed a higher level of execution and I was encouraged to see how competitive we were tonight. We had some great rallies and started to show some poise in winning some of the longer ones too.
"We came up against some very good, athletic teams this weekend. We improved from the first match and that's what we need to do with a young team."
The Lady Vols outhit Utah, . 231-.112, and hit a blistering .310 in game one as they raced out to a 6-1 lead. UT led from beginning to end in the first two frames but had to battle in the third. Utah led the entire first half of game three and battled back and fourth for the lead until Tennessee took a 23-21 lead. Utah couldn't erase the three-point deficit that late in the game as UT was able to ride it out for the four-point win.
Shelly Sommerfeldt returned from injury to lead the Utes with nine kills. She nearly had a double-double in chalking up a team-high 11 digs. But, it was freshmen Kathryn Lovell and Lori Baird that led the Utes in hitting. Lovell amassed eight kills in hitting .316 for the match while Baird collected seven kills and hit a team-high .357. Fellow newcomer Airial Salvo also had eight kills on the night.
The Utah attack centered around Shannon Krug as she tallied 27 assists.
Both team tallied 8.0 team blocks and Baird's four total blocks led the way for the Utes.
Amy Morris turned in a double-double and led the Lady Vols with 13 kills and 21 digs. Julie Knytych had a match-best 38 assists while Kristen Andre tallied a match-high five total blocks.
The Utes return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 6, when they play at Utah State. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
