This Week
The Utes (4-0-0) wrap-up a four-game home stand with a pair of games this weekend. Utah hosts Purdue (1-3-0) in the first-ever night game at Ute Field on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The kick-off time has been moved back 30 minutes from the original schedule. A short fireworks show will follow the game. Utah then hosts Denver (1-1-1) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
In The Polls
? Utah moved up one spot to No. 21 in the Soccer Buzz Top 30 poll released on Sept. 6. The Utes also remained fifth in the Soccer Buzz West Region rankings.
? The Utes were among the teams receiving votes in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll released on Sept. 6. Utah was also ranked eighth in the West Region.
Scouting Purdue
The Boilermakers are 1-3-0, losing two games on the road last weekend. Purdue fell to Iowa State (1-0) on Friday and Missouri (2-1) on Sunday. Lauren Sesselmann (F, 5-8, Sr.) and Kalie Grambeau (F, 5-9, So.) both have a goal and an assist this season to lead the Boilermakers in points. Lauren Mason (GK, 5-11, Jr.) has played every minute in goal this season, allowing four goals in four games and making 17 saves. Head coach Rob Klatte has a 73-62-9 record in his eighth season at Purdue and a 129-107-15 career mark in 13 seasons. Utah and Purdue meet for the first time on Friday night.
Scouting Denver
The Pioneers are 1-1-1 after tying Colorado (2-2) last Friday and defeating Northeastern (3-0) last Sunday in their own Denver Soccer Classic. Denver plays at BYU on Friday night before taking on the Utes. Taryn Hemmings (M, So.) leads DU with two goals and two assists on the season. Rachel Fry (M, So.) has also scored a pair of goals. Danielle Wiley (GK, So.) has played every minute in goal this season, allowing four goals and making 12 saves in three games. Head coach Jeff Hooker has a 160-68-24 record in his 14th season at Denver. Utah leads the series against the Pioneers 1-0-0. The teams met last season on Sept. 10 in the Wake Forest Classic with the Utes winning 3-1.
Last Week
Freshman forward Jen Christoffers scored two goals and assisted on a third to lead Utah to a 3-0 win in its home opener over UVSC on Saturday afternoon at Ute Field. Hailey Marsh also scored a goal for the Utes. Goalkeeper Ashley Mason made three saves in the first 76:28 before freshman Emalee Rogers checked in for the first time this season. It was Utah's third shutout of the season. The Utes outshot the Wolverines 21-5 and had a 4-2 advantage in corners. Utah was whistled for 10 fouls to six for UVSC.
Utah jumped on Idaho for three first-half goals and cruised to a 4-1 win at Ute Field on Sunday afternoon. Amanda Feigt, Adele Letro and Kim Lloyd scored first-half goals for the Utes, while Melissa Wayman added one in the second half. Mason played the first 81:46 in goal for the Utes, making five saves in addition to allowing one goal. Rogers relieved her late in the game for the second straight day and was not forced to make a save. Utah outshot Idaho 23-10, but allowed the Vandals to have a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Utes committed 16 fouls to Idaho's 12.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 46-12-8 in his fourth year at Utah. Last season he guided Utah to its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, its second consecutive MWC Tournament title and a 13-6-3 overall record. In 2003, Manning was named the West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Rich's Remarks
On last weekend's games - "I really thought our attackers did some excellent things last weekend against UVSC and Idaho. There was good passing, movement and aggressiveness around the opponents' goal. Having Amanda Feigt, Hailey Marsh, Jen Christoffers, Melissa Wayman and Adele Letro score their first goals is a good sign for things to come."
On this weekend's games - "We've made some progress over the first four games and look forward to some terrific competition here this weekend. Purdue is a potent team. They have been an NCAA tournament team over the past few years and will be a great challenge. Lauren Sesselmann is a dangerous forward."
"Denver is a skillful group. We defeated them last season in a tight match. I like some of their attacking players, especially Taryn Hemmings and Jenna Billingsley."
"Friday marks our first night game at Ute Soccer Field. It should be a great environment to watch a high level college soccer game. I hope some of our faithful fans will enjoy it. And, I hope that many new folks are able to come out and see our team in action."
Injury Report
? Sophomore defender Katie Battazzo bruised her knee against UVSC last Saturday. She is expected to be out one to two weeks.
? Sophomore forward Chelsea Card had arthroscopic surgery on both knees this summer and is expected to start practicing this week.
? Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Amy Edman suffered a torn ACL last April and is out indefinitely.
? Freshman goalkeeper Lynzee Lee suffered a broken leg in June and is expected to be out until mid September.
? Freshman midfielder Danielle Sample is expected to be out until mid September with a torn ACL.

In the team statistics as of Sept. 6, Utah ranks second in shots (18.75 per game), second in points (8.00 per game), second in goals per game (2.75), second in assists per game (2.50), second in goals against average (0.25), tied for third in saves (4.25 per game), tied for first in shutouts (3), fourth in fouls (12.00 per game), tied for third in corner kicks (3.50 per game).
? In the individual rankings as of Sept. 6, Adele Letro ranks fourth in shots per game (3.75) and tied for seventh in assists per game (0.50) ... Kim Lloyd ranks tied for sixth in points per game (1.50), tied for fifth in goals per game (0.50) and tied for seventh in assists per game (0.50) ... Jen Christoffers ranks tied for eighth in points per game (1.25) and tied for fifth in goals per game (0.50) ... Ute Notes
? The Utes have started a season 4-0 for the first time in school history. The Utes went undefeated through seven games in 2002, but had three ties during that stretch. Utah was 3-0-1 through four games that year.
? The Utes have shutout three teams this season. Ashley Mason has two complete-game shutouts and shared the third with Emalee Rogers against UVSC on Sept. 3. Mason has allowed just one goal while making 17 saves in 344:07. Rogers has not allowed a goal or been forced to make a save in 21:46.
? Utah allowed its first goal of the season against Idaho on Sept. 4 with 15 seconds remaining in the first half. The Utes had held their opponents scoreless for just over 314 minutes to start the season.
? Utah scored a season-high four goals against Idaho on Sept. 4. The Utes have also scored three goals in two other games.
? During the 2005 season, the Utes will face four NCAA Tournament teams from last year in Arizona, California, Pepperdine and UNLV.
? Four of Utah's nine home games will be played at night with lights being powered-up at Ute Field for the first time in 2005.
? Utah's 13 wins in 2004 equaled the second-best mark in the 10-year history of the program. The Utes also got 13 wins in 2002 (13-4-3), 2000 (13-7-1) and 1999 (13-7-0). Utah set the school single-season wins record with 16 victories in 2004.
? Soccer Buzz magazine rated the Utes' 2005 recruiting class as the 37th-best in the nation. This is the third consecutive year Utah's recruiting class has been rated in the top 50 in the nation. Soccer Buzz magazine has also named signees Lynzee Lee (GK, Kalispell, Mont.) and Katy Reineke (M, Salt Lake City) to its list of Top 100 high school recruits in the nation. Lee and Reineke, along with Jen Christoffers (F, Phoenix, Ariz.), have experience on the West Region Olympic Development Program team.
? Utah is 5-2 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams in four seasons under Rich Manning. In the Utes' only game against a ranked team in 2004, they defeated No. 7 UCLA (2-1) on Oct. 1. Utah was 2-1 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams in 2003. The Utes defeated No. 5 Florida (1-0) on Sept. 28 and No. 17 Michigan (4-1) on Aug. 31 at Ute Field. They lost at No. 6 Texas A&M (1-0) on Sept. 5.
Coming Up
Utah heads to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the University of Arizona's tournament next weekend. The Utes play Arizona on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. (MST) and Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 10:00 a.m. (MST). Please note that Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time instead of switching to daylight time.
