LOGAN, Utah- The University of Utah track and field team wrapped up competition today at the Utah State Open, with eight individual meet champions. The team had great efforts and victories from freshmen to seniors.
"It was an exciting meet with some good competition," say Head Coach Kyle Kepler. "We had some pretty strong victories from veterans like Vanessa Mortensen, and some of our young kids got some victories as well. The coaching staff and I are very pleased with the progress we made again this week. We are really looking forward to getting into the heart of our season and seeing how much more we can improve."
Vanessa Mortensen was a strong competitor for the Utes, placing first in the weight throw with a season best throw of 17.62m. Senior Ashlee Warnick won her first collegiate competition in the mile, clocking in at 5:27.00. Freshmen Haley McAllister and Ashley Patterson were members of the winning 4x400m relay. In addition, McAllister won her first-ever collegiate long jump competition, jumping 17'11 ¾', while Patterson won the triple jump with 11.59m. Jen Fresques won the 800m run with a time of 2:19.79. AJ Roby also shone for the Utes, placing second in the shot put and weight throw, putting in throws of 13.51m and 16.33m respectively.
The team will head to Idaho and Nevada next weekend for the Athletes Invitational in Nampa, and the Reno Pole Vault Summit in Reno.
