SALT LAKE CITY - You can't do any better than perfect. The 11th-ranked Utah women's soccer team was exactly that against the Mountain West Conference in 2006. For the first time in the program's 12-year history, the Utes didn't allow a goal in conference play to finish with a perfect 7-0 record.
The Utes capped off their historic run Friday night at Ute Field with a 2-0 victory over Wyoming (7-8-3, 2-3-2 MWC). Utah (14-4-0) also ended the regular season riding a 10-game winning streak, the longest in school history.
The game was well in hand for the Utes long before the post-game fire works show delighted the fired-up crowd on a crisp fall evening. Utah scored two goals in the first 22 minutes and let its defense finish the job. After getting an own goal by Wyoming in the 20th minute, Amanda Feigt scored just moments later on a breakaway opportunity.
The Utes outshot the Cowgirls 24-15 for the game and 12-4 in the first half. Ute goalkeeper Ashley Mason made three saves for her sixth complete-game shutout of the season. The Utes have held 10 of their 18 opponents scoreless this season.
The first of Utah's three corner kicks led to its initial score. After Kelly Isleib sent the ball in tight from the left corner, Wyoming keeper Ashley Sheppard couldn't come up with it cleanly. As Sheppard tried to secure possession of the ball, she stepped over the end line for an own goal at the 19:55 mark.
Utah kept the pressure on the Cowgirls and struck again just over a minute later. Fittingly, it was two seniors who connected for the score on "Senior Night."
Hailey Marsh sent the ball across the midfield line to Amanda Feigt, who sprinted ahead of the pack. Feigt made a couple of dribbles and drilled the shot from 20 yards out, scoring her sixth goal of the season.
Wyoming almost got a goal back with just over four minutes left in the half. Kiley Jones broke up a pass intended for Comfort Adetoye on the left side of the box. However, Jones couldn't control it and Adetoye received the pass on the second try, taking a hard shot from 10 yards away that missed off the near post.
With several substitutions coming into the game, the Utes lost their rhythm early in the second half but got it back for a couple of nice possessions later on.
Feigt made another long run in deep in the 60th minute, and centered it from the right side to Jen Christoffers. Christoffers didn't let the ball settle before taking a quick shot and missed the one-timer high.
Utah put together an excellent series of shots with just over 18 minutes to play. Senior Carisse Winegar blasted a shot from 35 yards out on the right side. Sheppard made one of her eight saves in the game to keep the ball out of the net, but allowed Marsh to get a header away that went off the cross bar. Feigt then collected that rebound for another hard shot the sailed wide left.
The Utes begin postseason play next week by hosting the Mountain West Conference Tournament at Ute Field Wednesday through Saturday. Utah receives a bye in the first round and will play its semifinal game Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
