The mtn. (The MountainWest Sports Network) will show highlights of the Utah vs. UNLV game on its "Soccer Insider" show on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 5:00 p.m. (MDT).
Utah Update
The Utes are 7-4-0 and won three in a row to wrap-up their nonconference schedule. Last weekend, Utah defeated No. 20 Pepperdine 2-0 at Ute Field. It was the Utes' third shutout of the season and second in a row.
Adele Letro (F, 5-8, So.) leads the Utes in points (11) with a team-high four goals and three assists. Amanda Feigt (F, 5-11, Sr.) is second in points (8) with a team-best four assists and two goals. Melissa Wayman (M, 5-10, Sr.) and Hailey Marsh (F, 5-8, Sr.) are tied for third in points (5) with two goals and an assist each. Goalkeeper Ashley Mason (5-9, Sr.) has a 1.29 goals against average with 32 saves and 13 goals allowed. She also has two shutouts.
Utah has more shots (143-102) and more goals (16-13) than its opponents this season, but has a deficit of 45-36 in corner kicks. The Utes have a 1.17 goals against average while their opponents have a 1.43 mark.
In The Rankings
? The Utes moved up four spots to No. 19 in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll. Utah is ranked for the second consecutive week and the fourth time in the last five weeks. The Utes held steady at sixth place in the NSCAA West Region rankings.
? Utah entered the Soccer America poll this week at No. 25.
? The Utes are receiving votes in the Soccer Buzz Top 30 poll and ranked eighth in the West Region rankings, moving up two spots from last week.
? Utah is receiving votes in the Soccer Times Top 25 poll.
Scouting UNLV
The Rebels are 5-6-1 overall entering the start of Mountain West Conference play. Last weekend, UNLV fell at Arizona State 1-0 on Friday and defeated Pepperdine 1-0 in double overtime at home on Sunday. UNLV won the 2006 Mountain West Conference Tournament and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA's.
Katie Carney (F/M, 5-5, Jr.) leads the Rebels in points with three goals and three assists. Armani Rice (M/F, 5-8, Jr.) is tied with Carney for the team lead in goals with three and also has an assist. Ciera Nero (GK, 5-1, So.) has played the majority of the minutes in goal this season and had a 1.04 goals against average. She has allowed eight goals and made 27 saves while posting four shutouts. Head coach Katherine Mertz has a 18-13-4 career record in her second season at UNLV.
The Series With The Rebels
Utah leads the all-time series with UNLV 7-2-1 and has a 3-1-1 advantage in Salt Lake City. In their last visit to Ute Field, the Rebels handed the Utes a 1-0 loss on Oct. 7, 2004. Last season, Utah got a 1-0 win over the Rebels on Oct. 22 in Las Vegas to clinch the 2005 MWC regular-season title.
Scouting BYU
The Cougars, who have the best record in the Mountain West, are 9-1-1 heading into their conference opener at TCU on Thursday night. BYU is ranked 15th in the NSCAA/adidas poll.
Katie Larkin (F/M, 5-7, So.) leads the Cougars with nine points, scoring three goals and assisting on three others. Katie Fellows (F/M, 5-7, So.) is tied with Larkin for the team lead with three goals. Erika Woodbury (GK, 5-8, Jr.) has played every minute in goal for BYU, posting a 0.44 goals against average to rank 13th in the NCAA. Woodbury has allowed five goals and made 36 saves while recording seven shutouts. Head coach Jennifer Rockwood has a 198-59-15 career record in 11 seasons at BYU. She led the Cougars to a tie for second place in the Mountain West and the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Series With The Cougars
Utah trails BYU in the all-time series 3-13-1 and has a 1-5-0 record against the Cougars in Salt Lake City. In the last five games in the series, the Utes are 3-1-1 versus the Cougars. Utah's home win versus BYU came at Rice-Eccles Stadium in the championship game of the 2003 MWC Tournament. Last season, the Utes and Cougars played to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 28 in Provo, Utah.
Coming Up
The Utes continue their Mountain West Conference schedule with a pair of road games. Utah plays at Air Force on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m. (MDT) in Colorado Springs, Colo. Then its heads to Albuqueruqe, N.M, to play New Mexico on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1:00 p.m. (MDT).
