SALT LAKE CITY - Accolades keep rolling in for the University of Utah volleyball team as it saw Airial Salvo and Whitney Webb earn AVCA All-America honors. Salvo landed on the second team while Webb collected third-team distinction.
They are only the second and third All-Americans in Utah history. They join Kim Turner who was the program's first as a third-team honoree back in 2003.
Bagging honorable mention All-America honors was Utah middle blocker Emillie Toone, who was among the top blockers in the nation with 1.93 per game.
"This honor for Airial Salvo and Whitney Webb is unbelievably exciting for both the athletes and the University of Utah volleyball program," said veteran head coach Beth Launiere. "To have two All-Americans in one year says a lot about our program and the success that we enjoyed this season.
"Both Airial and Whitney are deserving of All-America honors."
The awards will be presented Friday at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet at the Qwest Center in Omaha.
Only a sophomore, Salvo also won the Mountain West Conference's Player of the Year award. The outside hitter finished the season hitting .288, and also turned in averages of 4.13 kills, 3.35 digs, 0.45 aces and 0.78 blocks. Salvo had double-digit kills in 30 of the 32 matches this season and recorded 18 double-doubles on the year.
A pleasant surprise, Webb turned in an all-conference season in becoming a fixture on the floor this season. The outside hitter was an all-around player who averaged 3.13 kills, 2.67 digs and 1.29 blocks, all while hitting .344 (the second-best mark on the team). The junior finished the season with an impressive showing against No. 4 UCLA, tallying 17 kills, 18 digs, six assists and four blocks. Webb's season ended with 18 double-digit kill matches and seven double-doubles.
