SALT LAKE CITY - Burt Fuller, the former head coach at Utah State University, has been named to the University of Utah volleyball coaching staff, head coach Beth Launiere announced today.
Fuller, who spent the last five seasons in Logan, brings a wealth of success and knowledge to Utah as he joins the staff as its assistant coach.
"I am excited to have Burt join the Utah volleyball staff," remarked Launiere. "Our team has high goals in the Mountain West Conference and the nation, and the quality of my coaching staff needs to reflect these goals. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Burt's achievements at Utah State over the last five years and his experience, success and expertise at this level were the reasons I pursued him for the position."
While at Utah State, Fuller led his team to two NCAA Tournament appearances and guided his Aggies to an 82-70 mark. He chalked up two 20-win seasons in coaching two All-Americans (Erin Cartwright-Davis and Zuzana Cernianska) and 10 all-league selections.
The Aggies turned in a 21-13 record last season, finishing second in the Western Athletic Conference. They also took second in the WAC Tournament and earned their second NCAA Tournament berth under Fuller.
Their other NCAA Tourney showing came in Fuller's first year at the helm. In 2001, the team recorded a 20-11 mark and went 12-6 in Big West play. Not only did the Aggies make it to the NCAA post-season, but he led his Aggies to a 3-2 win over No. 19-ranked Brigham Young in the first round. Fuller coached five all-league honorees that year, the most on one team in USU history.
"I'm very excited to have this opportunity to join Coach Launiere's staff," said Fuller. "Beth has built Utah into an outstanding program and I am humbled by the confidence Beth has in me to come in and assist her.
"My time at Utah State has been remarkable. We accomplished some great things and I have to thank our players, assistants and administration for a great five-year run.
"I already know a lot of the players at Utah. They are tremendous people as well as great athletes, and I'm looking forward to working with them in the gym."
Prior to Utah State, Fuller was a long-time assistant at national power UCLA. In his seven seasons in Westwood, Calif., the Bruins went to the NCAA Tournament six times. They finished second in 1994 and made two Elite Eight appearances. His 2000 team finished No. 7 in the country. While at UCLA, he helped coach 23 All-PAC 10 selections and five All-Americans.
Fuller's first head coaching job was with Los Angeles Pierce Junior College where he coached the women's team in 1992 and 1993. He was also an assistant on the men's team as well, helping them to a national title in 1992 and a runner-up finish in 1994. He also has stints as an assistant at Fresno State (1989) and Chico State (1985).
Other coaching endeavors for Fuller include: two years at Los Altos (Calif.) High School where he was named Central Coast Section Coach of the Year in 1998; the summer of 1997 when head coach of the USA Maccabiah Team that took first in World Games; and last summer when he was Intermountain Region Youth Team coach, guiding it to a championship at the 2005 Global Challenge here in Salt Lake City.
Fuller earned his recreation management degree from Chico State in 1986 and was a member of the men's volleyball program from 1984-85. Prior to that he obtained his associate of arts degree from Los Angeles Pierce Junior College in 1982. While at LA Pierce JC, he was a middle blocker during the 1981 season and led his team to the state tournament in 1982 as an all-conference setter.
