PROVO, Utah - The Utah women's soccer team competed in the BYU Spring Outdoor Tournament on Saturday. The Utes rallied behind a late Paola Marsenaro goal in the opener to tie Utah Valley State, 1-1. In the nightcap, the Utes fell to BYU, 2-0.
UVSC opened the scoring early in the second half, knocking in a rebound from a free kick. Utah evened the score with a little over five minutes to play as Marsenaro got on the end of a cross from Emily Campbell. The Utes had a couple of late opportunities to win the match as Campbell and Carisse Winegar got behind the Wolverine defense, but were not able to convert.
BYU scored in the 29th minute as Kelsea Kakadelas got on the end of a cross and headed it past Utah goalkeeper Lynzee Lee for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars then added a second score right before halftime as Annie Zwahlen took a through pass and slipped it underneath Lee.
Ashley Mason stepped into the goal for the Utes in the second half and was kept busy. Utah pushed several players forward trying to get back in the game but were unable to score.
"We got some good information about where we are at this point of the spring," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "It is easy this time of year to get caught in a training rut. The competition was very good for us even though we had hoped for better results. We put ourselves under too much pressure by giving up the ball too easily. So, we will continue to work on our possession. I was very pleased with our goalkeeping as Ashley Mason, Lynzee Lee and Emalee Rogers all performed well. Also, I think we've made some good improvement in areas of defending."
Utah finishes up spring play this weekend with a trip to Oregon. The Utes will face the University of Oregon on Friday at the NIKE campus in Beaverton. The trip will continue on Saturday as Utah takes on defending national champion University of Portland on the Pilots' campus.
