Ute Kickers Tie Ducks, Fall To Pilots In Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Utah women's soccer team finished its spring season with a pair of games played in wet conditions last weekend in Oregon. The Utes played the University of Oregon to a 0-0 tie and fell to the defending NCAA champions, the University of Portland, 2-0.
The opening game of the trip on Friday was played on the Bo Jackson Field at NIKE headquarters. Neither Utah nor the Oregon Ducks from the Pac-10 Conference were able to put the ball in the net.
Utah forward Paola Marsenaro had a shot go over the top and defender Melissa Crespo had a header from a corner kick sail just wide late in the game. All four Ute goalkeepers, Ashley Mason, Amy Edman, Lynzee Lee and Emalee Rogers, played and contributed to the shutout.
On Saturday, the Utes traveled across town to face the Portland Pilots at Harry A. Merlo Field on the Portland campus. The Pilots used a pair of goals from Rachel Rapinoe--one in each half--to propel them to a 2-0 victory.
The Ute defense played well in disrupting the Portland attack. Central defenders Amanda Sanchez and Melissa Crespo created turnovers and forced the Pilots into several offside calls.
Utah created periods of good rhythm. Katy Reineke sliced and diced on the left side and Danielle Sample came off the bench to give some good possession. However, the Portland defense proved too tough to crack on the day.
"This was a great trip and a good way to finish our spring season," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "We got a couple of good games under our belt. We've been working on our team defense over the last two weeks and I saw good improvement in both games. Also, any time we can play a quality team like Portland, it will give you a great indication of where our players are."
"We head into the summer having worked very hard this spring," Manning continued. "I have great confidence that our players will put in the necessary time to prepare. We have a talented, experienced group returning and look forward to an exciting fall season."
The Utes will open their 2006 home season on Sept. 1 when they host Washington State University in the Utah Fall Classic. Utah's entire 2006 schedule is expected to announced in the coming weeks.
