COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah junior Katie Battazzo was honored as the Mountain West Conference Sportsmanship Award recipient for 2005-06. The award is given to the student-athlete that has distinguished himself/herself through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The student-athlete also must demonstrate good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting and be in good academic standing.
An environmental studies major with a 3.92 grade point average, Battazzo joined the Utah women's soccer program in the fall of 2002. She led one of the top defenses in the nation and was named to the Soccer Buzz all-West freshman team and garnered all-Mountain West Conference first-team honors. After sustaining a serious knee injury at the end of her freshman season, she continued to be a model student and a peer to her teammates. She managed to stay connected to the team by going to practices, counseling teammates and participating in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), even while facing the possibility of never playing again. Her hard work and dedication paid off as she returned to the field in September 2005, helping the Utes to a conference title and an NCAA tournament appearance. A two-time Academic All-MWC honoree, Battazzo was also named a Conference Scholar Athlete.
Outside of school, she was active in several service projects, including an alternative spring break in New Orleans to work on Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
