SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah volleyball team is selected as a co-favorite to win the Mountain West Conference in a preseason poll of coaches and selected media members released this afternoon.
The Utes garnered six first-place votes, tallying 116 total points. Brigham Young was selected as the other co-favorite. The Cougars also had six first-place votes and 116 points.
Utah returns eight letterwinners and five starters from the 2005 team that went 23-9 overall. The Utes finished 11-5 in league play last year and claimed the MWC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament when they won their third conference championship title.
Colorado State finished third in preseason voting with 101 points while UNLV (83 points), San Diego State (59), Wyoming (59), New Mexico (42), TCU (41) and Air Force (14) round out the rest the selections.
Among Utah's returners are two preseason all-conference picks. Sophomore outside hitter Airial Salvo was a preseason selection while sophomore Shannon Krug was the preseason all-conference setter. Salvo and Krug were the only sophomores selected to the preseason all-conference team.
Last year, Salvo won West Region and MWC Freshman of the Year, while Krug was named setter for the All-MWC Tournament Team.
The 2006 campaign begins when the Utes venture to Gainesville, Fla., to participate in Aquafina Invitational on Aug. 25-26. The first home matches are when the Utes host the four-team Utah Liberty Bank Classic on Sept. 8-9.
