SALT LAKE CITY - Senior Melissa Wayman scored the first goal and assisted on the second as the Utes defeated Utah Valley State College 3-1 on Tuesday night in a women's soccer exhibition match. A crowd of nearly 700 was in attendance on a near-perfect evening at Ute Field.
Both teams utilized their benches extensively in the season tune-up. Nine players attempted shots for Utah, resulting in an 18-6 edge over the Wolverines. Utah also finished with a 5-0 edge in corners
The Utes opened the scoring on a corner sent in by Emily Campbell in the 12th minute. Campbell's floater from the left side allowed Wayman to head it in toward the left side of the net.
Wayman then set up fellow senior Amanda Feigt for the second goal of the game in the 15th minute. Feigt took a pass from Wayman as she approached the top of the 18, broke free from the UVSC defense and beat keeper Kelly Thompson with a shot to the upper right corner of the frame. Feigt fired a game-high seven shots.
The Wolverines clawed back in the game, getting a goal from Mallory Schott in the 21st minute. Schott slotted her shot past Ute freshman keeper Lynzee Lee's right side. Lee was a last-minute replacement for senior Ashley Mason, who tweaked a muscle in pre-game warm-ups and was kept out for precautionary reasons. Lee made four saves in just over 77 minutes before giving way to Amy Edman, who didn't face a shot.
Sophomore Jen Christoffers, coming off a knee injury late last season, scored the final goal for the Utes in the 30th minute. Adele Letro presented Christoffers with a nice ball that was lifted off the pitch and into the lower right corner of the net.
"I was pleased with our effort. It was just nice for us to get out and play someone," said Ute head coach Rich Manning. "No matter how much you practice, you can't simulate game speed in practice.
"We tried some different combinations tonight, just trying to get as many people in as we could. We have a few players coming off knee injuries who couldn't go too long, but I wanted to get them in. I was very pleased with the speed of our attack in spurts."
Utah opens its regular season at the Santa Clara adidas Classic Aug. 25-27, facing the host Broncos and Stanford. Santa Clara is ranked No. 2 in the Soccer Buzz preseason poll, while the Cardinal is No. 19. The Utes open their home schedule with the Utah Fall Classic Sept. 1-3.
